How to Make Up Your Make Up Bag

Rebecca Furtado
Having our makeup where we can get in case we need a little touch up is the reason most women have makeup bags. The bags vary in size and content just like the varied needs of the women who carry them. They can range from a zip lock baggie to designer bag costing close to a hundred dollars. What is more important than the look of the makeup bag is what you decide to put in it. Most women will pick a small to medium makeup bag for their essentials.

The size of you cosmetics can be a problem. It is perfectly acceptable to move your foundation or mineral makeup to a small after market container. Make sure the container is sterile and seal well. If you are flexible purchase a compact of powered makeup in the same shade as the powder you use on you in the morning and keep on your vanity. There are now a number of smaller amounts of mineral makeup packaged in a tube with a brush that could be used to replace a compact in a makeup bag.

There are some items that are essential for all makeup bags. A small sided compact mirror or travel mirror with a protective cover is one of them. A mirror for you make up bag should only cost you about five dollars. Also you should have a collection of essential brushes.

Don't forget to clean or replace your brushes often. Blush and eye shadow brushes are the basics that every women needs. Again to cover all your bases you can purchase a compact set of quality brushes for around ten dollars. If you're a girl on a budget you can get some acceptable brushes at the dollar store for considerably less. Just remember you will be replacing the bargain brushes more often so they may not save you that much money in the long run.

Your choice of makeup bag should have two compartments. One zipper compartment for makeup and the other for makeup brushes. This will protect your brushes from accidental spills from liquid makeup. If you work 12 hour days or go out of town you may want to add some travel sized deodorant and a tooth brush to your makeup bag. This way your toiletries are always in travel mode. If you are going to end up redoing all your makeup during the work day or before an evening out on the town you may want to include a package of facial cleansing clothes. Again if you a girl on a budget cut up some inexpensive baby wipes into 4x4 squares and places them in a zippered sandwich bag.

Makeup essentials are a bit based on age; foundation or primer is used by women to cover large pores. If you are young and have smooth skin foundation may be something that you use only on special occasions. Some women only use foundation and a little blush unless they are dressing up. Foundation tends to come in bulky bottles so it is something you may want to consider transferring to an easy to seal after market bottle.

Concealer is a must for most women to cover up dark circles and blemishes. It can be used with foundation or with mineral powder makeup. It is something most women will want in their makeup bag '"just in case". It is easy to find great concealer in tube form or lipstick style so it is not hard to find room for it in most makeup bags. Remember to go with a concealer that is a couple of shades lighter than your normal skin tone for optimum coverage.

Face powder in traditional compact form or in a small container with a twist out brush is necessities for your makeup bag. Most women will find the newer mineral makeup provides better coverage and has a lighter feel than many of the traditional matte face powders. If you are looking for a heavier and longer lasting coverage traditional compact face powder has to be applied less often than mineral powder. Just remember to remove it as soon as you can as the heavier face powder can settle into pores and cause break outs. It can also settle into wrinkles and make you look older. It is a good idea to check you face more often and have a makeup sponge to blend your powder with when needed.

You will want a palate of at least three eye colors to achieve your 'Smokey look' eyes that are still all the rage. You will want a palate of eye shadow that compliments your eye color and skin tone since you will not be basing your color selection on the colors you are wearing. Pick colors that are good touch up colors or good for just everyday wear. This way your eye shadow palate will serve for touch ups and overnights; both equally well.

Clear mascara is a good choice for your makeup bag. You can touch up your darker mascara you applied at home or you can apply a fresh coat of appropriate clear daytime mascara for work.
Clear mascara is a good essential to include in your make up bag.

Lipstick should be a neutral color that complements your skin tone. If you are touching up your make up for work then you do not need the dramatic colors or to 'fill in" your lips with lip liner. If you think you will be redoing your makeup for dinner after work throw in one darker shade of lip stick. If you use a long lasting matte lip stick you can always freshen your lip color up with some lip gloss. Girls who have some natural color to their lips may want to skip the lip stick and just use the gloss for daytime makeup. Lip gloss also can help your lips not feel dry during the day. Throw in a tube of chapstick too to use when you head out into the cold winter air.

Add a small pot of powder cheek tint or blush. You should stick with a natural shade and not go for multiple colors to achieve that hallow cheek look. You simply want to add a little healthy color to your cheeks. If you are going for a healthy glow for daytime make up wear consider using a light bronzer instead of blush. You can usually find a small pot of bronzer to fit in your bag. Don't forget a small but study blush brush. Wash and dry the brush once a week to keep your cheek color from becoming the source of bacterial breakouts.

You will want an eyebrow pencil and a pencil eye liner in neutral tones that compliment your natural color. Of course you only need pencils if they are part of your everyday makeup routine Brush on eyeliner usually is too dark and intense for daytime wear. Pencils tend to be easy to store in your makeup bag. Remember to put a small sharpener in your bag as well so your pencils are always ready to use.
