How to Make Upcycled Christmas Ornaments

Chad Daw
Making upcycled Christmas ornaments is not only fun and satisfying, but it also decreases the amount of garbage that is thrown out every day, which in turn helps saves the environment one step at a time. Using common household items that would usually be thrown away has become fairly common in the last few years, and anybody that is willing to put some time into making them can accomplish the task, giving them something to be proud about for years to come.

Before beginning this project be sure that you have a few items on hand:
• Pop or beer can
• Scissors
• Leather gloves
• Templates or patterns
• String or fishing line

Step 1: Cut the Top and Bottom

Begin by putting your leather gloves on, and using the scissors, carefully cut the top and bottom of the can off. Do not use too much pressure or the can will fold and crinkle, leaving unsightly marks on the finished ornament.

Step 2: Straighten and Clean

After the top and bottom of the can is removed, cut a straight line down the length of the side, leaving you with one curled piece of aluminum. Now wash the piece of can with warm water, being careful not to cut yourself on the sharp edges. After the aluminum is clean, bend and mold the piece until it is as flat as possible.

Step 3: Cut the Christmas Ornament

Use a template or pattern and place it on top of the piece of aluminum. Carefully cut the design out, taking your time to ensure that the lines are straight and uniform.

Step 4: Attach Hanger

After the piece is cut to form, punch a small hole on the top edge with the sharp point of the scissors, giving you a place to tie the string or fishing line so that you can hang the handmade Christmas ornament on the tree or wall.

That is all there is to making a Christmas ornament with basic household items that would usually be thrown in the trash. Making upcycled ornaments is actually a great family activity, but an adult should to the cutting because of the sharp edges on the cut aluminum can.

You can also get creative and paint designs on your ornament, or add string and beads to decorate it even more. The ideas, and possibilities, are endless and only stop where your mind ends.
