How to Upgrade the Epson P-3000 Media Hard Drive

The Epson P-3000 device is an external computer hard drive. The unit includes built in SD and media card readers allowing you to read files on these storage cards as well as move files from the cards to the external drive. Like all external hard drives the Epson P-3000 is a computer hard drive encased inside a plastic and metal enclosure. The standard 40GB drive that comes installed may eventually become filled with files at which point an upgrade becomes a viable option.

Disconnect the P-3000 from the USB connection by pulling the USB cord out of the computer's USB port. Remove any media cards or SD cards from the P-3000 slots.

Turn the unit so that the SD and media card slots are facing you. Locate the two hex screws on the front of the unit. Use the hex screwdriver to remove the two hex screws.

Turn over the unit. Locate the single hex screw on this side and remove it. Slide the battery compartment to the open position and remove the batteries.

Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws inside the battery compartment. Gently pull the plastic panel away from the unit. This panel is the panel with the battery compartment door attached. Do not pull the panel far from the unit as an internal speaker is attached to the inside of the panel.

Peel off the two rubber strips on the top of the unit to reveal more screws. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove each of these five screws.

Locate and remove each of the screws on three of the four corner edges of the unit. Note that while there are four edges of the unit, there is only a single screw on three of the four edges.

Remove the back panel of the unit. Remove the ten screws holding the hard drive bracket in place. There are four screws on one side and six on the other. On the side with four screws one screw is blocked by a metal plate. Use the Phillips head to gently bend back the thin metal to reveal the screw.

Carefully lift the hard drive out and gently pull on the hard drive connector cable to disconnect the hard drive.

Connect the new hard drive to the cable connector and place the hard drive into the bracket. Replace the ten bracket screws. Replace the back panel and the three corner edge screws.

Replace the top five screws and the two rubber strips. Replace the battery compartment side panel and replace the two battery compartment screws. Replace the three exterior hex screws to complete the process.A

Avoid static shock by touching your hands to a metal surface before handling the hard drive to protect against static electricity damage.
