Inspect the cut pieces by placing them together to make sure they are the same size. Next is to sew the pieces together then adding a zipper. If you're the type that likes to change the covers on your cushions and pillows often instead of sewing them together, use velcro. Sew the raw edges of the material under approximately one-half inch; then sew on the velcro. Use a sewing machine instead of sewing by hand the stitches will be tighter and last longer. Sew the pillow with the material inside out so the stitches won't show on the outside.
Fill the pillow with either loose polyester fiberfill, or down. If you are striving for the loose floppy pillow effect try stuffing the pillow with rags or material that will achieve the floppy look. When upholstering a couch or chair cushion use foam rubber or another firm material.
Purchase pillow and cushion patterns from upholstering shops or sewing shops. If this is your first venture, stick with solids. Solids are easier to cut patterns from. If you have a print or floral background on your chair or couch pick one of the colors from the pattern.
Determine whether the material you choose needs a heavy duty sewing machine or a light duty which is the type most people have in their homes. Consult the clerk at your favorite sewing or material store.
When attempting this project for the first time keep it as simple and easy as possible. Remember if the cushions you are upholstering are either T-shaped or L-shaped measure that area also to allow for the extra material.

Post a CommentThis "How to", sort of reminded me of that Saturday Night Live skit where Steve Martin was instructing on how to not pay taxes on a million dollars. "First, you get a million dollars, then, you don't pay taxes on it..."
