Downsizing makes sense for many families whose children have moved out, to those who simply wish to cut their living expenses and live a more frugal lifestyle. But making drastic lifestyle changes is not easy when you are planning to make cuts to your spending and living arrangements. How can you get used to living with less when you downsize your home?
Downsize In Advance
Before you pack up the house and load the removal van, take the time to get used to the upcoming changes in your living arrangements by downsizing from the inside out, well in advance. Start off by carefully sorting through each room in your home and purging it of any furniture, appliances, clutter and other things that you will not be taking with you, and get used to living with less in the run up to moving day. Make a list of what you plan to keep, sell or donate from each room and do not allow sentiment to cloud your judgement as you start the purge.
At first, it may seem as if you are living in a sparsely furnished home, but you will notice the benefit of getting used to living with less clutter when you move into a smaller home and you have room to accommodate more.
Change Your Shopping Habits
Do you often find yourself buying clothes, home furnishing or trinkets for the children on a whim or as a personal reward? If so, you will find it even harder to get used to living with less as you prepare to downsize.
To combat this tendency you will need to change your shopping habits and learn to say no to those enticing money-off deals and the clearance racks during the sales, unless you absolutely need to go clothes shopping for the children or other necessary expenses come up. When you do go shopping, be resolved to sell, donate or recycle at least one item you no longer need, so that you are not adding to what you already have.
Downsizing your home can make economic sense, as you move into a smaller property and make budget cuts by trimming your daily expenses. But it can be difficult to change your mindset if you are used to a different standard of living. Start by downsizing from the inside out, well in advance of your moving date, and change your spending habits so that you do not accumulate even more when you are trying to cutback and live with less.
