How to Have a Vacation at Home

Katherine Huether
So, you've reviewed your finances and realized that you can't afford to go on an expensive vacation this year. Does that mean you're doomed to stay in the office while others are off making memories on their trips? Not necessarily. Why not take the time off anyway and have a vacation at home?

While some people take time off to work on their homes or run important errands, you can take the time off but stay home and plan fun and inexpensive day trips for your family. The goal of a vacation is to relax and recharge and this is something that you can do just about anywhere.

When will you take the time off?

If you have a family, you may be looking to take time off when your kids are out of school. This means summer or any of the other school breaks that happen throughout the year. Since summer is the longest break, this is the most logical choice. Summer certainly presents you with a lot of options. For example, on one of your vacation days you can take the family to the local pool or a nearby lake to swim, picnic, and enjoy the sun. It's fun and also inexpensive.

What does your area have to offer?

Try to look at your area from a tourist's perspective. When people visit, what do they want to do? If you live in a big city like Boston, New York, Chicago, or San Francisco this may seem like an easy question to answer. But in some of the rural areas, you may not think that you have a lot of options. However, there is something to do no matter where are you are. Even rural areas have things like hiking, parks, and public swimming pools. You can get some help by checking out your local Chamber of Commerce or a travel guide. You can also check online.

What would you like to do?

After you figure out what your area has to offer, make a list of all the things you'd like to do. For example, if your idea of a great day is one that involves fishing, make sure you go fishing one of the days. If you like to shop, spend some time browsing the local mall or any other shopping your town or any nearby cities have to offer. There are probably also things like museums, historical sites, and other things that tourists would be drawn too. Make a list that pleases everyone whom you will be "vacationing" with.

What about your budget?

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that since you're "vacationing at home" then this will automatically save you money. While that may be true, it's easy to spend too much no matter where you are. Set a budget for the week and stick to it. This will help you choose the activities that help you stay well within the budget.

Vacationing at home can be a fun alternative. Just remember not to go overboard doing chores, housework, and errands. This vacation is all about relaxing and recharging and even though it is tempting to want to be productive while at home, try to resist this urge. You'll get a lot more out of the experience.
