First, you should be aware that this is a very large card. The size is necessary because you are attaching full size candy bars to the card. This will be explained in more depth later on, but for now, the most important part to remember is that this is a large card. Typically it is done with a posterboard as the card, but it can be done with any extremely large material. A matboard, like is used in picture frames, would work well for this type project. Check at your local department store, or in an art supply store for something appropriate for the background.
Once you have your board, you are ready to begin planning. There are several ways to proceed. Either you can think of the verse first, or you can see what candy bars are available in your local store. Either way will produce the same results. It is very important not to write anything on the actual board until you have decided exactly what you want to write, and where to place the candies.
The idea is to make a funny verse that uses different candy names. Because it is for Valentine's Day, the message should be kind and loving, but funny to read, especially once you place the candies on the board. Following are some ideas for the verse, but the best thing is to write your own verses from your heart. "I would be thrilled, (Baby Ruth), if you would shower me with (Hershey's Kisses) this Valentine's Day." "You make me feel like a (Hundred Grand Bar)." "My heart leaps for (Almond Joy) when I see you." "Being near you makes me so nervous that I turn into a (Butterfingers)." "If you ever left me, my heart would (Krackel)." These are only ideas, and you should make sure that your local grocery store carries all of the brands before writing the message. Make sure to combine several candy bars, because it makes the message sweeter and funnier.
After you have purchased all of the candy bars and know exactly what you want to say, you need to work on spacing it on the card. It should be written with enough room to place all of the message and candies, and still have room at the bottom for you to sign it. Also, it should not leave too much blank space at the bottom. It's a good idea to use a spare posterboard to work out all your spacing and application. Write a bit of the message, and then place your candy bars in their correct spot before moving on to the next bit of the message. After you have the spacing perfect, use it as a guide. It's very important to remember that you should glue the candies down as you go. You do not want to accidentally forget to include one. Use a hot glue gun, and apply only enough to hold it in place. You do not want to melt the candy or the wrapper.
This card is certain to never be forgotten. For years afterwards, they will be telling all of their friends about the Valentine's Day candy card that you made for them. No matter which candies you use, there are a lot of chances to have fun coming up with a humorous message. Just make sure to use your imagination and have fun with it. After all, that's the entire point of this card.
