How to Be a Valuable Employee in Rough Economic Times

Jennifer Vasconcelos
Let's face it - times are tough and things are likely to get worse instead of better - at least over the next few months. Here are a few things you can do to be considered a great employee and be more likely to keep your position. I work at a place that fires at least a few people per month. It's not a high paying job by any standard but it pays the bills (mostly). In a place where turnover is so high one has to be considered valuable by supervisors.

1. Be punctual. Employees who constantly show up late are demonstrating a lack of respect for the companies and their co-workers time. Showing up on-time or even a bit early shows you care.

2. Be willing to do more than is asked of you. If you know there is something that needs to get done and you are able - do it. Your boss will appreciate the extra effort you put forth.

3. Keep a good attitude. When your boss or even another employee asks for help or a favor smile and say emphatically - "sure" or "absolutely!".

4. Stay until the job gets done! This shows that you care about the quality of your work and that you are dedicated and diligent.

5. Offer to train or work in other areas or departments. This is called being "Global" which defiantly makes you a more valuable employee. This allows you to expand your horizons as well and let's everyone know your open-minded.

Those I have watched get fired over the past ten months did none of the things I mentioned above. The sad part is, that just a slight attitude adjustment may have saved their jobs. It's rough out there and it makes sense that you should do your best everyday and appreciate that a steady paycheck is coming in.

Especially if you work in retail, or food service. These tips will not guarantee your job however they greatly improve the chances you will not be at the top of the list should the time come to make more cuts. A general overall good attitude and winning work ethic is favorably looked upon by superiors.

No work place is perfect. There are I'm sure problems and challenges. Keeping a good attitude isn't always easy especially in a negative environment. Rise above all this by keeping a sense of humor about it. I work with a lady who hates me. I know she hates me because she gives me dirty looks. I'm forced to work with her. I know she hates me - I just don't care. I go to work, do my job and do it to the best of my ability and go home. She can hate me all she wants - it doesn't change my focus on doing a good job everyday and making myself more valuable to the company (which incidentally is why she hates me - I make her look bad) she refuses to do better so who do you think will be first to go? That's right - soon she can just stay home and hate me. It's all good.
