Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) codecs are also used for instant messaging, video, audio, online games, and multimedia sessions. To lower the error message rate, identify which codec a media-based file is using while it is playing. This is helpful when you want to share files and need to verify that the receiver has the required codecs to play a file.

Determine What Codecs Are Used By a File

1. Start Windows Media Player and then play a file.

2. Right-click the file in the library while it is playing.

3. Click "Properties," click the "File" tab, and then review the "Audio codec" and "Video codec" sections for a list of codecs used to compress the file.

Determine Which Types of Codecs Are Installed on Your Computer

1. Connect your computer to the Internet and then Start Windows Media Player.

2. Click "Help" and then click "About Windows Media Player." (Note: Click "Organize" navigate to "Layout" and then select "Show menu bar" if the Help menu is not displayed.)

3. Click "Technical Support Information" on the "About Windows Media Player" dialog box to open a web page with information about codecs, filters, services, plug-ins, binary files installed on your computer.

Be sure to back up your computer and set a restore point before you download and install a codec. If you download a codec from an untrustworthy source, your computer operating system can become corrupted. Visit the component manufacturer's website for compatible codecs, when needed.

(Note: You must have Windows 7 and Windows Media Player installed to apply these steps.)
