If you decide to add video to your website make sure to practice your speaking and video taking skills beforehand. A shaky or blurry video is not going to bring visitors back to your site. Neither is a video in which you are stammering along while trying to get your point across. Doing a few test runs before putting the completed video on the website is a very good idea. Get a friend to help. Ask them to critique your speaking skills and help you improve. Use a tripod to keep the camera steady while the video is being taken. Really polish the video before you present it to the online world.
Don't do video on just anything. Videos are a great tool when used properly, but when someone uses them for silly things they lose their value. Good reasons to use video on your website are for how-to's, craft projects, and weight loss diaries. These are things that people will want to see. It's easier for someone to learn how to do something when a video is supplied. Seeing the craft project from beginning to end will make others think they are capable of doing the same thing. And weight loss videos are very encouraging to others who are in the process of losing weight. The whole point is to make the video educational and interesting. If you've explained the concept well, and people learned something from the video they will return.
Videos will enhance your website if used properly. Making quality videos that are interesting is the key. Be personable but concise when speaking on the video, use language most people can understand, and make the video entertaining. Yes, even how-to videos can be entertaining. Nobody wants to watch a dry emotionless video. Spice it up a little, add a few jokes, or talk about funny mistakes you made when learning the trade. If you can make people laugh or really feel for what you are saying in the video they will remember it and want to see more. They will also pass it along to a friend which brings more traffic to your website.
Make eye catching, entertaining and informative videos, and they will help your website. Make dull, silly videos with no actual worth and they will give your website a bad reputation. Whether videos on websites are a good idea or not depends largely on the person who makes them. Use them wisely and videos are a great tool for your website. Use them incorrectly and you're better off not having them at all.

My little digital camera takes pretty good videos. For a website you'd probably want a real video camera though...to make it more professional.
Quite an informative article. I keep thinking I'm going to try taking videos with my digital camera, but I never do it!
