How to Use Vintage Fabrics to Decorate Your Home

Vintage fabrics are a great way to add some elegance into decorating your home. They can be used for a variety of different items in all different rooms of the house. If you like the look of vintage fabrics, then here is how you can use them to decorate your home.

Transform vintage fabrics like cotton and linen hankies into accent pillows. Accent pillows are not hard to make if you have a sewing machine. Or you can have someone you know make the pillows for you. Add some crocheted trim or embroidery to the accent pillow to add some more charm to them. The pillows can be used for a couch, chair, bed or even displayed on a shelf.

Use ruffles and eyelet trimming to soften the look of form-fitting slipcovers on chairs or couches. The trim on the slipcovers will add some elegance or a little bit of a country feel to the room.

Use vintage fabrics to make the dust ruffle for your bedroom. You don't even have to know how to sew to make a bed skirt. You can simply drape the fabric over the edge of the bed making a dust ruffle on both sides. If you have a pretty embroidered flower pattern this will look charming with a white blanket or quilt on the bed.

Another way that you can make a dust ruffle is to take embroidered handkerchiefs and sew them onto a cotton panel that is attached to a bed sheet. This way you can see the beautiful hankies decorating the bottom of the bed.

Pin up a piece of vintage fabric with thumbtacks to make a stylish pantry covering or a cafe curtain in your kitchen. You can also use this to hide a closet in a bedroom instead of doors.

Take squares of patterned or floral vintage fabrics and frame them in distressed-looking wooden frames. Make a collage of the framed fabrics to go in the bedroom or living room.

If you know how to sew well or you know someone that is a god sewer, you can always take your vintage fabrics and turn them into a patchwork throw. This is an inexpensive way to decorate a room and the best part is that you can make a patchwork throw that will fit your needs and style of your home. Lay the throw over a couch or purchase a quilt rack to hang the throw on.

If you have scraps of your fabric you can always turn them into little accessories such as purses or potpourri bags.
