How Vitamin D Plays a Role in Liver Health

Improving Health Naturally

Organ health is vital to our longevity. When working to improve your overall health, there is no doubt you've been advised to take multi-vitamins as a way to get the nutrients into your body that would otherwise be missed through the normal course of diet. If you are concerned about your liver health, it may be important to further supplement your vitamin intake by also supplementing, further, with vitamin D in capsule form.

Vitamin D is a foundational vitamin that is believed to be the pre-cursor to many hormones and improves muscle and bone function. To ensure the liver remains in optimal function, and to provide the liver with nutrients it needs to covert vitamin D for the body's use, extra vitamin D supplementation is quite commonly recommended for patients.

The liver, by its very nature, is responsible for processing vitamin D in the body and supplying the organs with the necessary vitamin D levels to produce hormones, improve muscle function, and to improve nerve and bone function. But, to ensure the liver is functioning correctly itself, it first must utilize some of the vitamin D to improve its own health. If you are a patient who has a complication involving liver health, the use of vitamin D will be essential to not only boosting the function of your liver but to also supply your body with the vitamin that you may not otherwise obtain by liver processing.

When considering vitamin D supplementation, never take the vitamin without first obtaining consultation from your physician. In many cases, your doctor will provide vitamin D in once-per-week supplements that can be as high as 50,000 IU doses. Do not be alarmed by these doses as they are essential to restoring your body's overall health.

As with most forms of vitamin supplementation, there are risks and there are benefits. For patients who have existing complications with liver health, or for those who may be at-risk for developing liver complications in the future, there is often a need to use specific vitamin supplementations carefully. If you are one of many patients who have this type of concern, speak with your doctor about the use of vitamin D supplements. In doing so, you may find that your liver health is improved overall and you have a better quality of life.
