How to Use Vodka to Kill Weeds

Safe and Green Weed Killer

When it comes to an all around home remedy ingredient, vodka is the thing you need. While this may be a little expensive, there are several cheap vodkas out there that work just as well. There are many different things that you can do with this substance. Myth Busters recently did a show about the many uses of vodka, and amazingly, most of them worked. From getting rid of foot odors to cleaning spots in the garage, vodka worked on them all.

One more thing that you can use this popular Russian liquor for is killing weeds. This is one way that you can keep your home green and safe. There are no harsh chemicals or dangerous substances in vodka to pose a threat to your pets or children (as long as you don't let them drink it). When it comes to the chemicals that can poison your family and pets, you should really consider the alternatives. There are many green options to give you a healthy and earth friendly garden.

The reason that it works is fairly simple. The best time to use it is during the heat of the day. You spray the weeds that are in the sunlight. The alcohol will soak into the plant and evaporate in the sun. This evaporation will dry out the weeds. You can add a couple things to it to make it work even better. By adding a couple teaspoons of dish soap to the vodka, this will help it to stick to the plant. This addition makes it much more effective. You can also add salt to this. By adding salt, you can kill the weeds that are there and the salt will be diluted as you water. That will allow you to use it on the weeds without harming the plants that you want to keep.

While vodka is a good weed killer, there are some downfalls to it. The only real disadvantage to using this as a weed killer is that it does not discriminate between plants you want to keep and the weeds that you don't. This is a very good way to get rid of pockets of weeds, weeds in your drive or walkways, or weeds in open areas. For things like crabgrass or weeds in your garden, you may want to use another alternative. The only other downfall is the fact that it is alcohol. You will either want to drink it and not waste it on the plants, or you don't want to drink it and don't like it in the house. No matter which view you have on alcohol, there are other (usually better) uses for vodka.
