I had this problem when I was working full time and going to school in the evenings. I would get no more than a few hours of sleep a night and would wake up late for work almost every morning. I hated the feeling of running late or knowing that I was going to get into trouble for being late. Waking up late just threw off my day and I felt like I was playing catch-up for the next several hours.
Wake Up on Time Tip #1
Do not urinate before going to bed. This was the best way to get me out of bed in the morning. I refused to pee after eight o'clock. This made sure that my bladder was really full by 5:00am and I was forced to get up on time. A full bladder got me up better than all the alarm clocks in the world.
There is one drawback with not peeing before you go to bed. You may end up having to make a bathroom trip before you are supposed to wake up. This is still a good technique because even if it's an hour before then you will still be slightly more awake and not in a deep sleep when your alarm clock does go off.
Wake Up on Time Tip #2
Move your alarm clock so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Put it on your dresser so that it's out of reach even if you lean and stretch at the end of your bed. I had a friend who put his alarm clock on the floor in the hallway and then put a pan over it so that the sound was amplified. It may have agitated his neighbors but he got up on time every morning.
If you are just going to crawl back in bed and go back to sleep then hit snooze instead of turning off your alarm clock. You will have to get back out of bed in a few minutes to turn it off.
There is one problem with moving your alarm clock farther away. If you're like me, you may not even hear it. That's where tip #3 comes in.
Wake Up on Time Tip #3
Set more than one alarm clock or get an alarm clock with two separate alarms. Do not set the alarms for the same time, instead set them three minutes apart. This way you will either be hitting snooze every 3-5 minutes or you will just get out of bed and start your day.
I set three different alarm clocks to go off two minutes apart from each other. I set the one next to my bed to go off first so that I would hear the alarms that were across the room. There were times when I wouldn't hear the first two until the third alarm clock went off. Then I was scrambling trying to figure out which one to turn off first.
These wake-up tips will get you out of bed on time. I combined all three of these tips to get me up on time and I still use these techniques when I need to get up early.

Post a CommentI never appreciate sleep more, than when an alarm clock is going off.
LOL @ Randy! Excellent tips, Kim!
My son needs to read this. I told him he would miss the Rapture if it came while he was asleep. He would tell Jesus "Just 5 more minutes"
Your first tip is quite interesting and I can see how it works! Great article!
who sleeps?
Good tips. It sounds like you really do have trouble waking up. I have the radio come on quietly in the mornings, and no matter how quiet it is, I always wake up. However, in the past I have also conditioned myself to not wake up even if a loud alarm goes off, if it's not for me.
nice tips for a very common problem :) these mornings, though, the lovely songbirds wake me early & pleasantly
I haven't needed an alarm clock in years, I always wake up on my own. It's a blessing, and a curse.
In my auditory hierarchy, alarm clocks are second only to dental drills, both of which bode unpleasant outcomes. Loved your tips and may share them with one of my offspring.
I normally wake up at 7 whether my alarm clock goes off or not. But I do hit snooze to keep my eyes closed for a few more minutes. If I tried to move my alarm clock away, I'd just throw things at it ;)
