How Do Walgreens Brand Products Compare to Brand Name Products?

Sharon Tulley
Buying medicine at grocery and drug stores can be costly even if they are over the counter products. Walgreens is a drug store that has it's own brand of over the counter medicines as well as name brands. But which name brands does Walgreens substitute with Walgreens brands? And how do they measure up?

Band-Aid bandages

I have a relative who needs bandages for their dialysis port area and he swears by the Walgreens brand over Band-Aid brand bandages. They are a fraction of the cost of Band-Aid brand bandages but they work just as well. In his case, he believes that they work even better.

Clariton

I have seasonal allergies from the pollen in the air during parts of the year and I used to take Clariton for them. Once only a prescription, Clariton was available finally over the counter and it worked just as well. But then I tried the Walgreens brand and I found an affordable way to combat my allergies.

Vivarin

For those times I need some caffeine to help me stay awake, drinking coffee is not what I want. Vivarin and Jet Alert are two name brand caffeine stimulants. Walgreens has a "Stay Awake" store brand of such stimulants for those times when you need to keep going and getting something done. Of the three I mentioned, the Walgreens brand is comparable but it sometimes can cause a headache if I take it to bring myself around in the morning. The best one in my opinion for being awake and alert without side effects if taken correctly is Jet Alert. It hasn't caused me any headaches from proper usage.

Classic Coke soft drink

Walgreens has generic soft drinks but how do they compare to Classic Coke the soft drink? When it comes to soft drinks, you can't beat the "real" thing! Generic soft drinks are passable for some sodaholics, especially on a budget but there's nothing like a good Coke Classic.

Primatene Mist

Walgreens has a generic Primatene mist that my sister uses sometimes for her asthma. With the Walgreens brand of bronchilator she can breathe easier and save money at the same time. Although when it comes to life or death of losing your breath some people may swear by the Primatene brand.

Aleve

I have chronic pain in my joints and inflammation. When the doctor suggested I take Aleve it was a refreshing change to ease the pain. Aleve worked wonders. But I found the generic version of it at Walgreens and it works just as well.

All the name brands I mentioned are wonderful. Sometimes they come with a heftier price though than the generics or Walgreens brands you can buy at Walgreens drug store. If the generic or Walgreens brand is just as good or better, it's economical to buy the Walgreens brand next time.
