How to Walk Without Falling in Stilettos

Wearing Stiletto's is one of the most dangerous acrobatic acts today. Women never consider this an act, however, it takes practice to learn how to begin wearing heels. The learning to walk eloquently and stay upright on these shoes is definitely a balancing act. The price of wearing a pair of stilettos vs. the damage they cause over the long run is obviously worth it to most females. Ask any shoe manufacturer which shoes make them the most money yearly. They will tell you: Stilettos or high heel shoes. The high heels for women are a multi million dollar business. Women love their shoes.

There's no doubt about it, heels, stilettos or whatever you want to call them, definitely make the legs appear sexy; more sexy than any other shoe. Women wearing them have more definition to their calves. The look encourages one, two or even a lingering stare from the opposite sex which is definitely what women want. So, naturally when trying to gain the attention of the opposite sex, look more appealing or sexier in an outfit, if a woman can wear stilettos in comfort, and even some not so comfortable, they will risk wearing shoes with higher heels.

There are major drawbacks however to wearing stilettos (high heels). The one drawback that creates more broken ankles, cracked bones, vacations in the hospital, back problems and even a few fatalities has been wearing heels.

Over the long run, when wearing high heel shoes for long periods of time, over time,, there is going to be damage to the body. High heel shoes cause the body to be out of alignment. The movement of the skeletal system from its proper position can be uncomfortable and if not watched, over time can cause irreparable damage. However, this might be nothing compared to the damage caused if a fall occurs.

A fall, occurring while wearing stilettos can result in fractures, damage to the back or upper extremities of the body, even death. To diminish or prevent a fall while wearing high heels or stilettos, the wearer can take several precautions.

How to Walk and not Fall in Stilettos: Walk at a Natural Pace

Walk at a natural pace while wearing stilettos; Not too slow and not too fast. Walk naturally taking very calculated steps. Be very careful making sure to be aware of each step you take while deliberately taking them. Fashion models are taught to be very aware of every step they take. Their walk is something discussed very thoroughly and in detail when first starting out. However, as they become more skilled at their profession, they place less attention on their walk. They've built their confidence to such a level where they can move without even thinking about each movement. Walking to them has then become an art. It's similar to driving to work. When we first begin driving to work you are very aware of the route. You watch every corner, light, even stop sign. After driving the same route for so long, it becomes such a habit, it's more like getting dressed; You can do it in your sleep. Walking in stilettos can be the exact same. After a period of time, it becomes such a habit, it's etched in your brain. You are so accustomed to the practice, you do it without thinking.

How to Walk Without Falling in Stilettos: Don't look Down

Don't look down as you walk. When you look down, it tends to make you more aware of each step and the problems each step can cause. Looking down as you walk can cause you to make an error and believe it or not, watching the ground as you walk can make you fall. Watch where you're going, but don't watch the ground. For example, if you're a typist, when you first begin to type, you practice repeatedly after learning the keyboard. After a series of strokes, over time, you know the keyboard by memory. Your fingers begin to have a memory of their own. You use your fingers and not your eyes in typing. However, if you look at the keys while typing, you make mistakes. The memory is in your fingers, not in your eyes. Walking in stilettos can be safe using the same practice. Learning to work with the memory in your feet and not your eyes keeps you safe from falling. The minute you take the focus off your feet, you set yourself up for a fall. As strange as it may seem, if you keep your focus up and not down on your feet while walking, you should be safe.

I'm with Michele - I wore 4" heels for years because I hated being short but my toes are now suffering.

Great stiletto advice; but I don't dare wear them. I once fell and broke my ankle while wearing flat shoes. I guess I'll have to leave stilettos to the younger ladies .... and Tina Turner.

Heels are definitely bad for your back and feet but they sure do look good. However hubby is only 3 inches taller than me so I don't wear heels!

I do not miss working in offices where we were heels. The only time I wear them now are special occasions and holidays!

Years of walking in heels ruined my poor feet!!! I used to dance in them, too. I wrote a poem once, "Love was never born amidst a bent toe and a corn...from now on, my lover will be spared the shocks, I swear I'll sleep in socks!" LOL cheers :)
