How to Get What You Want When Calling a Business

Stephanie Modkins
If you ever called a business and wondered why the person on the other end couldn't help you, read on. There are five common things people do when calling a business that make them unsuccessful in getting the assistance they need. Avoid these mistakes and decrease your frustration and the amount of time you spend on the phone.

Baby, Baby
Are you a young mother or father with a baby who cries whenever you pick up the phone? Quit wasting your time trying to talk to your insurance agent over the phone. He can't hear you or assist you properly for all of the screaming in the background. Get a plan. Schedule an hour or two to make important calls and during this time leave your baby with a sitter. You'll see how much of a difference this makes in your level of peace and ability to control your personal business.

Foodies Who Eat
Calling a business to renegotiate a bill? Don't eat your lunch at the same time. The person on the other end can hear every smack and crunch. What you're doing is so distracting and rude that he truly wants to hang up. Be polite. Finish consuming your food prior to the call or afterward. While you're on the call, focus on the other person and get what you need done quickly without all of the sound effects.

Low Talkers
You are probably the kind of person who is a meek and tender hearted. Yet, your extremely low voice makes a meaningful conversation over the phone almost virtually impossible. To the listener, you sound like you're mumbling. Draw on your "big girl" or "big boy" voice and talk at a normal level, so your effort to tell your bank rep that someone fraudulently wrote a check against your account could be heard. Otherwise, live with the fact that you will never get your account in order without making three or four calls.

Anonymous Me
If you're calling a business, but don't want to identify who you are, all the details of your call or even your last name, hang up. You obviously are such a private person that you can work out all of your problems by yourself. People in every level of customer service will tell you that they need information to help you. Be smart. Expect to give the basics when you call a business so the person on the other line can do the kind of things for you that feel like good service.

Angry As A Mad Dog
There's nothing wrong with being upset about an error made by a business, but when you turn this feeling into abuse, you've gone too far. Don't act like a mad dog when you call a business for help. Your emotion will turn a five-minute question into a twenty-minute berating. And guess what? Some people won't help you if you treat them poorly. Your anger is not scaring them; it's just resigning them to seek revenge by doing nothing.

These five things will prevent you from getting the assistance you need when call a business. Avoid doing them and get your personal affirms completed in a more efficient way.
