How to Get What You Want from Life

Do you feel as if you are not getting what you want from life? Are you dissatisfied with your job, your significant other, your friends? Many people feel discontent from time to time with their lives, and no one is ever going to feel content with their life 100% of the time, it's just not possible, nor realistic to think so. And yet, there are things you can do to get those things you want from life. You may have unfulfilled dreams that you want to try and bring into fruition, or maybe you want to meet someone special but you think you are too shy, geeky, heavy, or whatever. The truth is you can have at least some of things you want out of life if you know how to go about getting them. Many people give up thinking that there is no way, so don't be one of them.

So, how can you get what you want from life?

The first thing to keep in mind is to remember that your wants are going to change as you get older. What may have seemed like the biggest dream of your lifetime at age twenty-two, may not at age forty. So, be willing to be flexible with your dreams and desires, this is the first key to getting what you want from life.

The next step is to decide what you actually do want out of life. This can be a very daunting prospect for some, and the younger you are, the less you may actually know what you want. Be kind to yourself. Not everyone is always going to know what they want from life right off the bat. If you don't know, give yourself the time to determine what you want. Become a detective of yourself, keep a journal where you can draw or write as your heart desires while you look for clues. Keep lists of your likes and dislikes, and ask yourself questions such as, "Where do I want to be in five, and then ten years?"

Once you have a good idea what you want and where you want to be in the future, come up with a list of goals. It doesn't have to be a long list, and it can even only be one goal if that is your desire. Also, some people even when they know specifically what their goals are, prefer to work on one at a time and this fine. It isn't a race to see how many goals you can come up with. It takes some people a month, others a week, and still others might take a year to determine the answers to their questions of what they want from life. This is fine. Just take your time.

When you have a goal(s) then you want to come up with the steps needed to attain your goal(s). For example, maybe you want to be a graphic artist. So, your first step might be looking into schools that give a degree or certificate in this. Then your next step might be applying to one or more of these schools, and then so you could pay for it, you might apply for financial aid. Anyway, you get the idea. Make a list of steps to follow so that you can attain your goal(s). Once you have the steps then begin following them one by one. If you are afraid you won't stick to it, maybe schedule the steps in your calendar, or have a friend remind you so that you complete the steps. Keep in mind that you may get to step three and decide that you don't want to attain that goal after all. Again this is fine. That is one of the purposes of setting up the steps to give you time to ascertain if that is really what you want to do.

All right, you've completed your list of steps to attain your goal(s), and you've scheduled it on your calendar, or set it up for a friend to remind you, and you are working on completing each step. You know for sure this is one goal(s) you want to attain. Now you want to begin using your mind to bring the goal(s) into fruition. People always look at me funny when I say that, as if I'm suggesting some sort of mumbo jumbo new age thing for them to do, but the fact of the matter is what we think in our minds about what we are doing affects whether we are successful at what we do. So, to use the example of becoming a graphic artist, this person would need to see themselves as a graphic artist already. In other words they need to see themselves as already having attained that goal. You need to see a picture of you as successful at your goal in your mind. For example the person could immerse themselves in a work study job or internship at a graphic design company to help with this as well.

Doing these five things, and following through with them to completion will help you to attain your goal(s) and get what you want out of life.
