How to Wash Your Delicate Clothing

Chuck Baker
First off, any fabric that is easily damaged should never be washed in a washing machine. The fabric could get caught around the agitator and torn or torn in the spin cycle. Always wash these fabrics by hand.

Next any fabrics that are delicate or have bright colors or that have not been washed before should be washed in cold water. If you use warm water or hot water it might cause the fabric to shrink or fade or the colors to run.

Next consider the type of laundry detergent you are using. For your delicate clothing it would be a wise choice to use a detergent that is specifically designed for hand washing your clothing like Woolite cold water laundry detergent.

Next the best way to get your clothing as clean as possible is to mix the water and detergent before placing the clothing in the water. And if you have some items that have stains on them and you are using a liquid detergent you can apply a small amount onto the stain and gently rub it in.

Next put your clothing into the water and let it soak for about 5 minutes. Then hand wash your clothing for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then thoroughly rinse your clothing in cold water. Again if you use warm or hot water to rinse your clothing they could shrink or fade

Next the best way to dry your delicate clothing is to hang them outside. If you put them in a dryer the heat from the dryer could damage or shrink the fabric as in the case of a sweater.

If you can't hang your clothing outside the next best thing is to hang them in the bathtub so they can dry. If you can't hang your clothing either outside or inside and you must use a dryer set the dry to the most delicate setting and check your clothing often to make sure they are not being damage by over drying. It is better to have them a little damp rather then damaged or shrunk by over drying. Also do not dry your delicate clothing with heavier types of clothing. by doing so will make the drying process longer and could damage your clothing.

Next a quick word about washing neckties. Don't wash neckties in the washing machine. They can become wrapped around the agitator and become damaged. It is best to hand wash and dry these as well although you may use warm water to wash and cold water to rinse the neckties.
