Most of us strive for healthy hair and there are numerous factors that go into having and keeping healthy hair including: good nutrition, amount and frequency of products and appliances used on hair, hair trims, plus so many other factors.

One factor to having and keeping healthy hair that I feel is often over looked is: washing hair properly. There are proper ways to wash hair, but I think many times the idea is: as long as the hair is being washed, that is sufficient enough. The knowledge is not often put out there, that there are ways to wash hair properly that will aid in having and maintaining healthy hair.

Hair washing begins in early childhood, from my own personal experiences and I think as well as many other people, the idea of washing the hair was to get it done as soon as possible and to get in and out of that bath as soon as you could. The memories of hair washing I have are: scrubbing as hard and fast as I could, making sure all the shampoo was rinsed out and rubbing like mad with the towel to dry the hair. Not the ideal of washing hair properly!

There are ways on how to wash hair properly and it is never too late to start learning, here you will find tips for washing hair properly and keeping your healthy hair beautiful.

How to Wash Hair Properly: Hair Shampoo

The temperature of the water is very important as water that is too hot can damage hair, make sure the water is lukewarm when soaking your hair before the shampooing process begins. It is helpful to lean the head back slightly in the shower and allow the water to run through the hair in a straight, downwards manner, it helps with alleviating tangles.

Use approximately a dime or quarter size amount of shampoo depending on hair length, place shampoo on the head area and very gently with the finger tips, go in a slow circular fashion, a little self scalp massage is great for getting rid of dead cells, cleaning the scalp and plus it feels great! Gently move your fingers down your hair by using circular motions and carefully squeezing the hair. You may need to add a little extra shampoo to the bottom half of the hair depending on the length. Rinse hair by again slightly leaning head back and allowing the lukewarm water to run straight down the hair, typically I will not rub my hair in circular motions at this time as I am trying to keep the hair as straight and tangle free as possible. Once hair feels squeaky clean, gently squeeze out excess water.

How to Wash Hair Properly: Hair Conditioner

Use approximately a dime or quarter size amount of conditioner and start the conditioner in approximately the bottom half of the hair using the circular motion as was done when using the hair shampoo. However, with hair conditioner it is best not to place hair conditioner near the roots as it can make hair flat and limp. Allow conditioner to soak into hair for a few minutes and then rinse using cool water. The cool water helps to close the hair cuticles, which helps to give shine to the hair. Gently squeeze excess water out of the hair, gently towel dry and comb using a wide tooth comb.

You can have healthy hair by knowing how to wash hair properly and taking the time to follow through with the correct hair washing procedures every time you wash your hair!
