If you find yourself in this situation don't panic. Wrap up in a towel and head to the kitchen. In the pantry or placed on a shelf of your refrigerator is an all-natural miracle worker that will make your hair squeaky clean in no time!
Baking soda, while considered a kitchen staple is also an excellent cleaning and degreasing agent. It's gentle, non lathering formula has been used for decades to help clarify and clean hair without purchasing those expensive clarifying shampoos. Baking soda when mixed in warm water will clean a number of surfaces, including your hair safely and cheaply.
Things Needed:
1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 cup warm water
Water sufficient for wetting and rinsing hair
Step One:
Place a teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of warm water and stir to mix thoroughly.
Step Two:
Wet hair thoroughly, making sure the water reaches all the way down to the roots.
Step Three:
Slowly pour the baking soda mixture on your hair, rubbing it into your scalp as you do so. Some find it easier to pour a little and rub that in before continuing.
Step Four:
Using a circular motion, massage your entire scalp working from front to back with your fingers. Do not use your fingernails: this will scratch the scalp and may injure you. Just lightly massage your scalp with the baking soda mixture. You will notice that the baking soda mixture will become creamy white as it dissolves grease and buildup in your hair.
Step Five:
Work the baking soda mixture out to the ends of the hair strands using a gentle rubbing motion.
Step Six (Optional):
If you hair is really dirty, allow the mixture to soak for a couple of minutes.
Step Seven:
Rinse your hair well with clean water.
Step Eight:
Condition hair as desired!
This method of cleaning hair is popular with those who are striving to use less chemicals on their hair, striving to save money or wanting to reduce the amount of plastic bottles they bring home from the store. Some have given this method a rather unique name: no-poo (as in no shampoo).
Enjoy your clean hair!
