How We Chose Our Son's Name

Tammy Lee Morris
When it came to choosing names for my three children, I leaned toward the more unusual and unique.

While pregnant with my first child, my husband and I decided not to find out the sex of the baby. We didn't care either way.

I was certain, though, that the baby was a girl and even my doctor suspected I was carrying a girl (based upon the baby's fast heart rate).

Convinced we were having a girl, I focused on choosing a girl's name.

About two weeks before the due date, though, my husband and I thought we should probably choose a boy's name - just in case.

Unfortunately, we couldn't come up with a unique choice.

We decided on Jacob Ozbourne (Ozbourne means "warrior of God" and at the time we were also big Ozzy Osbourne fans), but weren't crazy about it.

The weekend before the baby's due date, we went to the drive-in to see Nicholas Cage in "Con Air."

As we left the drive-in, my husband and I both agreed that Cage was a unique name for a boy - and the more we thought about it, the more we liked it.

A few days later, I went into labor and we had a baby boy.

What a surprise!

His name came from the movie we'd just watched with a slight change - instead of Cage with a "c," we named him Kage (with a "k") Ozbourne Waters. We changed it to "k" because otherwise his initials would have been C.O.W.

That's thinking ahead!

We didn't find out the sex of our first son either. We had a girl's ready to go but our little boy had to wait until he was 12 hrs. old before we gave him a name.
