HOW DO WE COMPARE the GULF OIL SPILL to KATRINA

(I Don't Understand the Comparison)

The media ask the question "Is This Obama's Katrina?" and I just don't get the rationalization of this question. Of course this is a major crisis that is by far the worst of its kind in American history but to compare it to Katrina is to
diminish the loss of life which occurred as a result of Katrina in my way of thinking.

The media (mainly Fox News) has made it a point of reference to number the times President Bush visited the region compared to the number of times President Obama has visited in the same timeframe. Let me put this in some kind of prospective if I can.

As I write this it is Day 50 of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and oil is still being released into the gulf. Fishing, tourism and the livelihood of many of the inhabitants of the region are being adversely affected. Wildlife is at risk and the fabric of the area's ecosystem is being eroded. Very serious stuff for sure and not to be minimized in the least but to compare it to the heartache and loss of life during and following Katrina is a stretch indeed.

Yet if we look back at the aftermath of Katrina we see 3 months following that disaster, thousands of people (human beings), were unaccounted for and the authorities were still finding dead bodies on a daily basis. There were children crying for their mothers and left orphaned by this catastrophe.

The state authorities were saying that the number of missing was over 4700 but the National Center for Missing Adults had the number at 6644 with 4000 cases being actively investigated. They believed that a lot of the missing would be found in other states but also admitted that they expected to find even more dead.

As over 400 bodies lay unidentified FEMA and state agencies argued over who would pay for the DNA tests to attempt to identify these persons. People searching for family members still had no closure as to whether their loved ones were dead or alive. This prompted funerals for the missing and assumed dead.

Let us travel six months following Katrina and there were still almost 2000 individuals uncounted for. Of that 2000 at least 132 of them were children. Even today there are families who still do not have complete closure as far as being able to lay friends and family to rest.

Missing husbands, missing mothers, missing children, missing grandparents and many have not been found to this very day. When we add the number of confirmed dead this begs me to wonder how this oil spill can be compared to Katrina. Not dismissing the 11 lives lost in the initial explosion of the oil rig, yet for loss of human life and suffering between this and that, there is no comparison in my mind.

It irritates me that they want to make everything a political talking point. Obama can do no more to stop the flow than Bush could have prevented the hurricane. So the judgment should be on how the aftermath is dealt with. The top minds in the world have been trying to stop the flow and yet it flows still. Join together and work as one to fix this instead of all the political rhetoric.

Yes, more lives were lost in Katrina and I don't think you can compare apples to oranges. This disaster will have a far more reaching effect for different reasons. One was mother nature and was was mad man- that's the biggest difference.

I totally agree with you, MightyB! In my mind, it isn't a comparison so much as another horrible disaster that a President is being blamed for mishandling!
