How to Wear Corduroy This Winter

Lisa Riggs
Much to people's surprise, corduroy made a huge splash at this year's fashion shows. The once maligned and unappreciated fabric is now a must have of the winter season. No matter how ambivalent you may feel about this material, it is very easy to incorporate it into your winter wardrobe. Whether you choose to go bold with corduroy, or only add a small touch here and there, this fashionable fabric will instantly update your seasonal clothing. Here are some suggestions on how to make your favorite cold weather outfits just a little more current.

Start Small. Designers know that corduroy is not for everyone. Some people have carried over their negative feelings about this fabric from the past, or it simply looks and feels too outdated for them. Whatever the reason, some gals simply can't fathom wearing a full on outfit made from this outfit. Luckily, many handbags, belts and hair accessories are available that include just a patch or swatch of the fabric. Adding just a simple accessory to your outfit that contains a bit of the fashionable material will give even the most classic winter outfit an edgy feel.

Bring Some Fashion into the Office. Corduroy is a wonderful choice for workday separates. The polished look combined with the comfort factor will help you to sail through your day at work looking great. Consider a nicely cut pair of pants paired with a long sleeve cotton tee and a blazer. A simple corduroy skirt over tights and topped off with a fitted turtleneck looks chic and professional. Select separates that can be mixed and match with staples you already own to get the most for your money.

Go Wild with Footwear. A fun choice when adding a bit of edge to any simple outfit is to take a few chances regarding footwear. A funky pair of corduroy patchwork boots gives leggings and a cardigan an up to the minute look. Pumps covered in this fabric add a bit of style to a pencil skirt and white ruffled blouse. Take a peek in your closet to inventory your dressy outfits you rely on the most during winter. Invest in a few pairs of shoes or boots that feature this popular material and can be worn with most or all of those ensembles. Keeping the colors of your footwear neutral will offer you the most versatility.

Keep to Your Personal Color Scheme. A terrific way to feel comfortable and fashionable in corduroy is by staying true to your own personal style. If you normally wear basic colors such as brown, gray, white and black, stick to them. Add a few stylish pieces to your wardrobe in those same colors. If you lean towards bold and bright when dressing for work or play, select corduroy pieces in the same hues. Maintain the integrity of your unique personal style when incorporating this new fabric to your wardrobe and you can't go wrong.

Nice fashion guide. My teen daughter love corduroy, and frankly, I was quite surprised to learn that it's popular again.

Nice tip about keeping it within your color scheme, I had a pair of forest green corduroy's as a kid that I hated, but now I want a pair lol, though I'd probably choose navy or some other neutral color now.

I have a soft corduroy pair of black pants that I absolutely love. They look good, and they're comfortable too. Thanks for the info!
