How to Wear Gauchos for Any Occasion

Arene Penelope
There is something mystical about a six-foot tall woman mannequin posing at the entrance of a department store and modeling tweed gauchos, a matching shawl-collar jacket, and high-heeled boots. This sophisticated attire has taken a sharp twist from the original rustic image of gaucho trousers, named after and worn by South American cowboys also known as gauchos. Who would have dreamed in those days that the calf-length, wide-legged slacks covered in mud would be re-invented as dainty trousers in the North American women's fashion culture during the 1960's and 1970's? Even after losing popularity in the 1980's, gauchos have made a powerful come back in the middle of the present decade as they are coordinated with a range of fashionable tops and accessories.

Now-a-days, gaucho trousers are appropriate for any occasion. The high-waisted design of gauchos gives the illusion of slimmer hips and waists -- creating a sleek effect. In formal environments that enforce business dress codes, employees can wear gauchos with a collared shirt or turtleneck and a vest that matches the gauchos. A dark-colored suit jacket with mid-length sleeves and coordinating gauchos also look great together especially when women wear them with pumps or heeled boots. The array of this outfit in wool, tweed, corduroy, or cotton fabrics is well-suited for the fall and winter seasons and is ideal for young adult to middle-aged professional women.

Gauchos are also common for employees with casual dress codes such as teachers and are comfortable preferences for stay-at-home moms and retired senior citizens. As part of casual outfits, gauchos are worn in thin, knit or cotton materials with matching long or short-sleeved blouses or jackets and accessorized with sandals or flat loafers. This style is sported primarily during the spring and summer months.

Then, all women encounter occasions where they want to dress elegantly such as at a banquet. In these cases, gauchos are most flattering with dressy Chiffon tunics that wrap around the chest and extend below the waist at an angle. A tunic with wide or bubble mid-length sleeves harmonizes the flared, mid-length design of gauchos and flows nicely with pumps and heeled boots.

Gauchos have definitely seen a turnaround from masculinity to femininity. Whether it be formal, casual, or elegant, gauchos will give an edge to applicants during professional interviews, give comfort to walkers strolling in the park, or give charm to holiday gala goers. Coordinating gauchos with the proper tops and shoes is all that makes the difference.
