How to Wear Leggings in an Office Environment

Leggings are making a comeback into the fashion world with a vengeance. Long associated with comfort and casual style, leggings can also be dressed up to wear in an office environment. Here are a few tips on how to wear leggings at the office while keeping a sleek, professional look.

When wearing leggings at the workplace, make sure you choose a pair in a solid neutral color such as black or brown. Don't wear a pair that has lace, rhinestones, or any loud prints or designs. Over sized sweaters and tunics work the best with leggings and are all the rage in fashion now. Find a top that is colorful, but elegant and made out of a sturdy material such as wool or silk. Also be sure when picking out a top to wear with your leggings, that it reaches just below your mid-thigh. Anything shorter than that will look unprofessional and indecent. Cinch your waist with an over sized belt and make sure to accent with elegant jewelry. I have found that wearing a long necklace in gold, silver, or pearls with matching earrings will dress up any outfit in seconds. Be sure you have on a t-shirt or camisole on underneath your over sized top as well, and never let your bra straps show.

As for shoes, save the spiky stilettos for dancing after hours and stick with flat, slouchy boots instead. These are not only the hottest look this fall, but they are very modest and classy. Choose a boot made out of leather or suede, and preferably in a neutral color minus any embellishments (buckles, rhinestones, etc.) If you choose to wear a shoe with heels, make sure they are a low, chunky heel. Ballet flats are also great to wear with leggings and look very classy and professional.

This look is a definitive throwback to the 1980s, however, do not feel compelled to tease your hair into a huge, hideous eyesore. After all, this is 2009 and you want to be fashion forward. Curl your hair so that it is moderately wavy and go with subtle colors for your make-up. Always remember your 'office face' and present yourself according to your company's image. Follow all of these tips and you will be certain to have a look that is both comfortable and professional.
