How to Wear Polka Dots This Winter

Lisa Riggs
The bleak grayness of winter makes it a perfect season to take a few fashion chances. The more conservative of dressers may have been a little put off by the resurgence of polka dots on the fashion runways a few months back. However, the neutral shades and popularity of fashionable layering of the winter season makes it very easy to incorporate this trend in fun and subtle ways. Here are some suggestions on how to add a little polka dot style into conservative seasonal outfits.

Keep Warm and Look Fashionable with Scarves. A simple outfit of black twill pants and a turtleneck sweater can be easily bumped up to high fashion with a polka dot scarf. Play around with different scarf lengths, fabrics and knots to find a multitude of looks that add that little bit of style. Jeans and a white tailored blouse also look fantastic with this accessory. That simple black dress that hung in your closet for years can instantly have an updated feel with a great polka dot patterned scarf.

Accent Your Waist with a Fun Belt. The most subtle dash of polka dots can be added to any ensemble with a great belt. Purchase several of these accessories with different color patterns to go with a variety of outfits for fun on the weekends. A great fitting pair of jeans, cardigan sweater and boots can be infused with a current feel by adding a polka dot belt. Leggings and a long sleeve cotton shirt can gain a whole new lease on life with a belt that has this popular pattern.

Layer in a Stylish Way. A polka dot blouse can still appear subtle and understated. Layering a blazer or cardigan sweater over a blouse in this pattern will minimize the effect, while perfectly maintaining the style factor. A little peek of the dots under a solid counterpart will keep the fashion forward look for those of us who favor the conservative side of dress. That little bit of edge will quickly take a very plain outfit into something runway ready.

Carry Essentials in High Style. If a blouse, scarf or even a belt is more polka dot style than you are comfortable with, opt for a handbag in this pattern instead. The beauty of a fashionable purse is that you don't need to have it attached to you all night. If you are still playing with this current style and don't quite feel ready to adorn a piece in this popular pattern, a handbag offers you a nice bit of freedom. A dotted handbag can be carried with a navy or winter white outfit for work or a night on the town. Once you arrive at your destination, the bag can be placed down for the duration of the stay. The little splash of style coming and going is just enough to add some edge to any cold weather outfit.

Have Fun with Jewelery. A polka dotted bangle or hoop earrings is a very playful and youthful way to add some energy to winter pieces. A jacket and skirt combination for the office or a fleece jogging suit for running errands can easily be made a little more trendy and current with a piece or two of stylish jewelery. This trend is so hot right now that there is a wide range of cost in polka dot jewelery. You can lay out just a few dollars to give the look a try without making a massive investment.

It is not necessary to drape yourself in polka dots from head to toe to take advantage of this youthful and fun fashion trend. Just a splash or two here and there can make you look very up to date, without losing the integrity of your own personal style.

Such cute ideas! I love dots, but they don't look as good on me now as when I was a teen.

These were really good tips, I used to have a polka dot dress as a little girl that I loved, I would totally wear one again, but in the meantime a scarf or a blouse with that print would be cute.
