How to Wear a Statement Necklace

Kim Elle
Statement necklaces have been seen on runways and adorning the necks of starlets since summer. Done right, a bold necklace can crank up the volume on a simple outfit. Done wrong, it can scream "hot mess!" Here are a few good rules of thumb for wearing the statement necklace.

Simplify the clothes. Avoid complicated necklines and voluminous silhouettes. They will compete with your jewelry, making the look appear over-worked. A statement necklace looks great with a basic shift dress or a plain top with a high neckline. Remember, it's a statement necklace, so let it do the talking.

Minimize the rest of your jewelry. Pairing your statement necklace with large bangles or cathedral earrings will add bulk to your whole look, and bulk is something we ladies are trying to avoid! And get out the flat iron! Big hair is in right now, but big hair with a big necklace is a big no-no. Keep hair smooth and simple. Aim for healthy shine over big bounce.

Stick with neutral solids. You don't want your clothing to compete with your necklace. It will speak louder against basic colors than it will onprints. You'll be tempted, but resist. Rachel Zoe may effortlessly pile strings of beads on top of florals and Pucci prints, but she is a professional. Some things are best left to professionals. However, if you do choose to pair a statement necklace with a garment of a loud color, make sure the colors compliment each (like a gold necklace against green or orange) other or that the necklace is black.

Understand your body's proportions. If you're petite or curvy, you want to avoid long strings of layered beads. It will chop up the line of your torso, making you appear shorter and wider. However, if you're long waisted or very thin, that effect can be quite flattering. Remember to always try it on! A statement necklace may look amazing on the display, but end up drowning you once it's on.

A statment necklace is one of the best ways to break a fashion rut and add spice to an otherwise boring outfit. Check your local boutiques and chain lifestyle stores like Express and Bebe. Invest in a higher quality piece if you have the money, but a statement necklace doesn't have to cost more than $30 if you look in the right places!

I agree I think less is more don't go overboard, mixing metal and that really big necklaces are way too much great for the runway not based in reality. I think a stunning a large exotic real gold necklace with a matching bracelet and small earring with an all black silk dress with a shawl with extra mascara on your eyes ...can take you long ways all the way to old world elegance!
