You can make a Wiccan talisman from any material you choose. Possibly the easiest material to work with is paper but a talisman can be made from bone, stone, wood, metal, clay, etc. Although you have doubtless seen many talismans available for sale with runes or symbols carved upon them for protection, the most powerful talisman will be the one that you make yourself. By making the Wiccan talisman yourself, it will be far more effective than one made by someone else or bought from a shop.
If you wish to use a metal to make your Wiccan talisman, you might want to consider which properties correspond to your magical need. The list below will help you decide which metal to use. Keep in mind that you may use any metal for any purpose talisman but for an extra boost, you might want to use the correct corresponding metal.
Silver
Silver is the metal best suited to a talisman for dreams, healing or purity.
Iron
Iron is the metal best suited to a talisman for loyalty and/or protection.
Tin
Tin is the metal best suited to a talisman for honor, marriage, riches or harvests.
Copper
Copper is the metal best suited to a talisman for beauty, family life, friendship, fertility, growth, harmony, love, pleasure, sexuality or nature. Copper may also be used as a substitute for any of the other metals when they cannot be easily obtained.
Lead
Lead is the metal best suited to a talisman for protection and/or strength.
Gold
Gold is the metal best suited for a talisman for beauty, creativity, fortune, money or victory.
Any Wiccan talisman can be made on paper, wood, clay, bone, etc. Metal is not a necessity when making a talisman but can boost the power of the talisman if it is available to use. Do not feel as though you can't make one if you don't have the appropriate metal. In addition, copper can be used as a substitute for any of the metals listed above. Copper discs are very easy to find at craft and hobby stores and can be used with success for making a Wiccan talisman.
In the case of our talisman for protection, we would use either iron or lead if we could find it. If not, we could use copper. If no metals were available and we still wanted to make a protection talisman, we could use clay, wood or paper. Use what is easiest for you to obtain. The material provides only a small part of the power of your Wiccan talisman. The real power comes from you.
The easiest way to carry a talisman is to wear it and it must be carried on the person at all times for maximum efficiency. You can hang the talisman from a chain and wear it as a necklace. For this purpose you would need a disc-like shape to hang from the chain with a smooth surface for carving or writing. Copper discs are ideal for this purpose. You could also carry the talisman in a pouch in your pocket. If you choose to carry the talisman instead of wearing it, you will need to sleep with it under your pillow every night. Choose a material and shape that will be easy for you to work with for your purposes.
On the front side of the Wiccan talisman you will carve or write something to make the talisman personal. This could be your name written in runes or another magical alphabet, your astrological sign, your witch name, your date of birth or a combination of any of these.
If you are using paper, you will obviously write your words and/or symbols on the front of the talisman using ink. For a wood talisman you can carve or use a wood burner. If you have decided to use metal for your talisman, you can use an engraving tool or any other sharp tool that can mark metal.
On the reverse side of the talisman is where we make the more important markings. Here we will place the object of the talisman. Since we are making a talisman of protection, we would place a symbol of protection. This can be a rune, a sigil, or any other magical symbol of protection that you might be able to find. If you are unable to find a suitable symbol, you could write the word out in a magical alphabet.
If you were making a talisman to draw luck or fertility, for example, you would place a symbol of these properties on the back of your talisman. You can use any symbol that is meaningful to you. Try looking through occult books or online for ideas of symbols that you could use.
Once you have completed making your Wiccan talisman, the only thing left to do is consecrate it. The following simple rite can be performed (before the cakes and wine ritual) to bless and purify your new talisman before you wear or carry it.
In the magic circle, sprinkle the talisman with salt water then pass it through the incense smoke and the flame of a candle. Say words such as these:
"O Great God and Goddess, here is my talisman. Bless it so it may serve well to protect me (or bring me luck, fertility, etc.) as I carry it. Let it be the keep all harm from me and harbor your love always. So mote it be!"
Lay the talisman on the altar, on the pentacle or a dish of salt, and touch it with your athame or wand. Direct your energy into it and concentrate on its purpose. For a protection talisman, see yourself happy and well protected. See the talisman emitting a bright white light around you to keep you safe.
Now, take it up and wear it or carry it on you always. Remember, if you are carrying the talisman to place it under your pillow each night before bed. Blessed be!
