How Will "Bikini Girl" Katrina Darrell Dress for the Rest of American Idol?

Sarah F. Sullivan
Call me pessimistic or rude, but the first thing I thought when I perused the web this morning was,

"Color me shocked. Bikini Girl is the newest web sensation."

Having never watched a complete season of American Idol since Season 5 when America chose Taylor "Soul Patrol" Hicks over Katharine McPhee, I felt that this year, I should give Idol another shot. What drew me back? Partially because new judge Kara DioGuardi was added to balance out the mix and she is a part of a more current music industry.

Having read that there would be changes to the format of Idol, which included a more concentrated focus on the good singers rather than the bad ones, I was interested to see what happened. Honestly, I didn't see any difference. There were the good ones, the bad ones and the downright awful ones. And then there was Bikini Girl. She fell into the category of what the younger generation would call "the Shluts."

Walking into her Idol audition in black high heels and a barely there bikini was unusual, but not over the top. Idol contestants have arrived wearing an assortment of costumes over the years, hoping they will make them "unique" and that they will "stand out" to the judges. The difference this time were the looks on Randy and Simon's faces when Bikini Girl, Katrina Darrell, walked into the room. From that point on, everyone knew that whether or not Bikini Girl was wonderful or awful, she'd be going through to Hollywood.

As predicted, she was mediocre at best. Thousands of girls with her level of singing have gotten rejected in the past, but it was the swimsuit and the not-quite-there attitude that got her through. Even though she talked back and insulted new judge Kara DioGuardi, Simon still proffered his opinion, "I still prefer Katrina."

Adding insult to injury, Randy and Simon had her jump up and down twice in celebration and on the second take, the editing crew was kind enough to put Bikini Girl's bouncing bod in slow-mo for America. Undoubtedly, women across the country watching the show gladly agreed with Kara when she called after an excited Bikini Girl,

"Next time come naked."

That does raise an interesting question: how will Katrina Darrell dress for the rest of the competition, assuming she makes it very far at all? Will she buy a wardrobe consisting of magical bikinis that get smaller and smaller every time she gets through to another round? Or will she just model the clothing line she's a part of, Pairadice Threads? A mix of slutty/white-trash chic that Britney Spears at her worst wouldn't touch, it definitely doesn't scream "class."

One thing's certain: if Idol was attempting to make changes to give themselves more credibility, they will only continue to lose it if Katrina Darrell makes decent headway in the competition.
