How Will You Celebrate Your Holiday This Year
People Have Different Thoughts on How They Should Spend Their Holidays
This may be the first time since your last holiday celebration that this group is together. If you have hardly spoken to each other this year, how do you share sincere greetings and prayers with an open heart?
Instead of having a holiday where everyone is just doing their best to keep up appearances until it is an acceptable time to bow out and go home, look in a different direction.
Holidays are time you have off from what you usually do. This alone is cause for celebration to some. Why not celebrate your holiday with a new group of friends?
Most towns have need of volunteers during the holidays. Think about what you can do to help someone. This does not have to cost your hard earned cash. Check with your local social service groups to find where you can do the most good. Some organizations will be delivering a freshly cooked meal to local people who can't leave their homes for medical reasons.
During the holidays local churches sometimes offer meals at their locations. Check with churches in your area to see who needs extra hands. If you have children who can help they might be included.
Keep in mind that the holiday celebration at local shelters and soup kitchens are often very modest. However, those who attend these gatherings appreciate the humble offerings and give thanks for what they receive. Realize that in most cases you will probably not eat until all the work is done. People who have been volunteering for years got over this fact a long time ago.
During every holiday season you will find some smaller groups that will be gathering food and other items to prepare gift baskets. These will be given to those who need what some of us take for granted. If you volunteer with such a group you will be asked to deliver these before the holiday. This will give you the holiday to volunteer elsewhere.
If volunteering is not your choice of a great way to spend a holiday, think about cutting back at home and donating money. It does not have to be a lot of money. Ten dollars or a bag of groceries will never be turned away from a shelter or kitchen that helps people in the town where you live.
Holiday celebrations don't have to be the same for everyone. You may find volunteering is what you enjoy most about all of your future holidays.
