How Will I Get Reimbursed for My Pet Insurance Claim?

Insurance payments of all kinds are hard to understand for everyone involved from the policyholder to the employee of the insurance company. Pet health insurance is no different and it will help you to understand when to expect your reimbursement if you know how the process works. The following information is a general idea of what to expect from your pet health insurance company when you file a claim for reimbursement.

First, it is important for you to know how the process works to even file a claim for reimbursement. You will go to the vet and pay your bill that is presented by the vet's office at the time you pick up your pet. Keep this invoice handy and pay the bill with your own funds. Then you need to request a claim form from your pet insurance company, which is usually available via their website.

Once you have the form you need to fill it out in full without leaving any blanks and make sure all writing is legible. The easier it is to understand your form the quicker it will be handled by the adjuster who receives it. Once received the adjuster will take your form and consider all information on the request. This individual will take the information about the services rendered and make sure it is covered on your policy.

If the service is covered the individual adjuster will then consider if your pet insurance policy has met the deductible or not. Almost all pet insurance deductibles are annual, so if your annual deductible has been met you will be reimbursed through the details of your policy. At this point a percentage of the services rendered will be reimbursed to you based on the agreement in your policy.

For instance, if you have not met your $100 deductible and your services are $300 total the adjuster will only consider $200 to be covered in your policy. If your policy covers 80% after your deductible that total will be $160 meaning that, in total, you will be paying $140 for this service.

All pet insurance claims will be a little different depending on the insurance company and the policy that you have. It is very important that you fill out all forms completely with your plan and policy number. If you don't receive a check within 30 days of sending in your claim it is in your best interest to contact your pet insurance company.
