How Will Tattoos Affect My Future?

R
It's no secret that a lot of people have tattoos today. From celebrities to soccer moms, this permanent artwork is becoming much more popular than it was in the past. But should you get one? And will it affect your future? Most of that depends on where you get your tattoo and what you plan on doing with your life. If you're planning to be in the corporate world and you get large tattoos on your forearms and down onto your hands, it's safe to say that you might have some trouble landing that corporate job. If you have tattoos that are on your upper arms or chest, though, or if they are on your legs where they are easily hidden, they really won't affect the kind of job that you get. No one has to know that they're there unless you decide to tell them or show them.

If you aren't interested in working in a corporate kind of world, it's very easy to get tattoos in places that show. People who work over the Internet, who don't work face to face with customers, and people who work in unconventional jobs often have visible tattoos. Would you really want to get a tattoo from an artist who didn't have any ink on his own body? Most people wouldn't even consider that. Work isn't the only thing that you'll have to think about when it comes to tattoos, though, because there are other societal interactions where they might matter.

If you go to church, will you be accepted there with visible tattoos? What about at your school? What kind of person are you looking to meet, date, and marry? If you're with a pretty reserved crowd you'll have to think about the fact that you might no longer be accepted there when you have visible tattoos. If that's OK with you, then there aren't any problems. If it's not OK with you, you'll have to give more careful consideration of how much that tattoo actually means to you. It would be a sad thing to lose friends over.

The argument can and should be made, though, that people should be your friends because they like who you are as a human being, not because they have an opinion about the color of or on your skin, how you dress, or where you come from. If they are true friends they shouldn't care about whether you get a tattoo, but some people are very opinionated and just really dislike them. It's worth finding out how your friends feel about this if you value their friendship. As long as you think carefully about your future and are willing to accept any consequences that body art might cause, go ahead and get that tattoo if you want to. You definitely won't be alone.
