How I Will Make it Through December Without Going Into Debt

Erin Rivera
With Christmas just around the corner it can be very tempting to pull out the credit cards as a means of purchasing gifts for my family and friends. However this year I am determined to stay out of debt and have a plan for not going into debt this December. Here is a look at this plan.

My first step of the plan is to earn extra money by having a yard sale and getting rid of all the unwanted items in my home. Having a yard sale is an excellent way to earn extra money for Christmas and to clear space in the home before Christmas day. I'm having my kids go through all their toys and I'm going through everyone's clothes and sprucing them up a bit. I plan to advertise by putting an ad on free online classified sites and in the local newspaper as well as by hanging up a few signs to point out where the yard sale will be.

Next on my plan for not going into debt this December is to sign up for sales online. I have a few favorite places I love to shop and I have found out that if you give them your email address they will send you special codes and coupons you can use toward your purchases both in stores and online. Since I do not like to just give out my personal email address I have made up one specifically for this. I have found that in some cases I have saved over 80% off on certain items I wanted to get this way!

Another step I am taking to not go into debt this December is to simply avoid taking my credit card with me when I go places. I have put it up in an envelope in a safe place so I will not be tempted into using it. It is still there in case I have an emergency but it will help me just use the cash I have on hand.

Last but not least I plan to avoid going into debt this December by selling items on online auction sites. Some of the items I have in my home such as movies, cd's, as well as maternity clothes and kids clothes are huge selling items on online auction sites. I'm cleaning those items up and selling them on online auctions and using that money to put towards my Christmas purchases.

By following these simple steps I look forward to getting my Christmas shopping done this December without having to cringe at the thought of getting my credit card bill in January.
