How to Win an Election

No Campaign Required

Mathew Paul
Nicole Pugh, a resident of Washington D.C. arrived at her polling station in November 2010, in order to cast a vote for mayor. She noticed a line on the ballot for an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. No candidate was listed on the ballot as no one was running for this office. On a hunch and with no knowledge of the office, she wrote her own name in. That very evening she was informed that she was elected to this office by a 1-0 vote. The office had been vacant for 14 years. The commissioners are not paid, and some are quite active and have some influence over what happens in the community.
