The first step to winning a soap box derby race is to actually find a race to compete in. These can be either very easy or difficult to find, depending on where you live. The key to finding a soap box derby race to compete in is to find one that fits your needs. Make sure that you check the requirements for both the driver and the derby car. Each race will have different rules and regulations and one needs to pay attention tho these.
The next step is of course to build your car to the specifications of the folks that organize the race. Decide on a design and begin constructing your car. Make sure that you have every single aspect of the construction figured out before you start building. The biggest key to winning a soap box derby race is having a design that has very little wind resistance. The lower your resistance is, the faster you will go.
The next step is to practice and get accustomed to your soap box derby car. Learn the ins-and-outs of your car.
Make sure to take very good care of your soap box car after each and every time you ride in it. Clean all wheels and make sure that they have no dirt on them whatsoever. Applying oil to the wheels after you ride will also allow them to move as fast as possible during your next ride. Make sure that before every race or ride you tighten the wheels up evenly. Having your wheels not lined up properly due to a loose bolt will ruin your chances of winning a race.
One of the most known tips for winning a soap box derby race is to wear eye protection. Wind can really blur vision and cause your eyes to close, not to mention dirt, sand, and rocks flying at your face.
The last step to winning a soap box derby race is to have fun. Enjoy yourself and do not take it too seriously. Remember, soap box racing is supposed to be fun and something that people of all ages can enjoy.
