How to Make a Window Box Planter with a Recycled Bicycle Basket

Mary Drew
Spring is here and everyone is out planting their gardens, going to yards sales and just enjoying the fresh air. Try this fun idea to combine all three. Make a cool window box planter using a great garage sale find. This window box planter is made from a recycled bicycle basket and can hang from any window, looks great and adds a beautiful addition to your home décor.

What you will need:

A recycled bicycle basket (it can be new)

Hardware to hang the basket

Sheet moss

Potting Soil

Started plants or seeds, which ever you prefer

Step One: Find an old bicycle basket at a rummage sale. You can by one new but I find it's better to recycle, it's cheaper and they can have so much more character.

Step Two: Mount your newly found recycled bicycle basket window box from a window. You may need to ask at your local home/hardware store what would be your best option for this, depending on the size and material of the basket you are using and the type of outer casing your window has. I found a great over the window ledge basket hanger, that my recycled bicycle basket just rests in, at a local home and garden store. It required no hardware and was under ten dollars.

Step Three: Line the bicycle basket with sheet moss. Sheet moss can be found at just about any place that sells gardening supplies. Just a thin layer is fine just make sure your cover enough to make a cove for the potting soil to sit in and then eventually your new plants.

Step Four: Cover the sheet moss with potting soil. This too can be purchased at any home store that sells gardening supplies or any garden nursery. If you know what type of foliage you are going to plant, you may want to discuss with a professional what type of potting soil will you're plants most benefit from.

Step Five: Plant your new flowers. I found very nice sized basket and mounted it outside of my kitchen window and planted herbs. They smell and look wonderful, plus the convenience of having fresh herbs literally at my figure tips all season long is great.

This is a great way to recycle something old and make it into a beautiful home decoration. It's a quick gardening project that only takes a short time to finish and the whole gardening project cost me less the fifteen dollars. You can't beat that for a custom looking window box planter!
