You will need: a rectangular piece of fabric which measures 18" by 12", a circle of matching fabric cut with a 3 ½ " diameter, and a 36" length of ribbon. Be sure to choose a fabric to suit the recipients' personality, or the occasion. Any kind of ribbon can be used, but the ribbon with the wired edges works especially well.
To make your wine bottle bag, take the rectangle piece of fabric and fold it lengthwise with the right side of the fabric on the inside. Pin the raw edges of the fabric together. Fold the ribbon in half. Place it inside the fabric, having the fold of the ribbon lined up with the raw edges of the fabric. The ribbon should be placed approximately six inches from the top. Pin the ribbon to the edge of the fabric. Using ¼ inch seam allowance, sew along the long edge only. Be sure to secure the beginning and end by backstitching. If you have an over-lapping stitch option on your sewing machine, you could use that to make the seam look nicer and hold up better. If you do not have an over-lapping stitch option, you could zig-zag along the edge to finish the seam. Press the seam flat.
Sewing the bottom on the wine bottle bag is a little tricky, but once you made one it'll be a breeze. Open the rectangular fabric so it forms a tube. With right sides together, pin the circle fabric along one end of the tube. It should match exactly. Sew the two pieces of fabric together, being careful not to get the ribbon caught in the stitching. Again, you should either use an over-locking stitch, or zig-zag around the edge.
Turn the wine bottle bag right side out. Fold the top edge down ¼", then fold it down another ¼'. This will form the hem on the top of the bottle bag. Using a straight stitch, sew around the top edge of the bottle bag. Press gently.
Slide the bottle of wine into the bottle bag, and bring the ribbon to the front. Tie a pretty bow and you're ready to go! Present your wine in hand made bottle bags every time you give a gift. If you give wine as Christmas gifts, make several bottle bags using Christmas fabric and have them ready to use as hostess gifts.
