How to Winterize Your Home

Viktoria Carrella
With winter on its way, you may want to think about how to prepare your home for winter. It isn't that tough to do but there are some actions you will want to implement before the cold sets in, making it hard to complete. It is important to make sure that your home is properly insulated so your heat does not escape. This helps you lower your fuel consumption as well as keeps you and your family warm throughout the winter months.

One important part of preparing homes for winter is to check the insulation in your attic to make sure it is sufficient. After years of settling, some insulation loses its effectiveness. This can cause your heat to be released into the outdoors while your heating costs sky rocket. If there is not sufficient insulation, you may want to consider replacing it. Consult your local home supply store with winterizing your home attic.

Check your exterior doors and windows for air leakage. You can remedy any leaks with calking or weatherization tape. This will help in winterizing your home and preserving your heat. Weather stripping helps winterize home doors that may not quite meet the threshold of the door. Sometimes even plastic over windows helps hold in the heat and keep the cold out winterizing your home even better.

Have your furnace inspected by a professional plumber. Sometimes winterizing home heating units can save you money and help heat your home more efficiently. Winterize home air conditioning units as well. They can be damaged by winter elements.

Your landscaping can also be winterized. Your sidewalks should be checked for cracks and missing sections. Fill these with concrete or cement and smooth it to the correct level. Winterizing home sublevel windows will save you on heating costs as well. They should have a window guard or plastic covering them to keep out moisture and cold. Make sure any fragile plants are removed and taken in so that freezing does not affect them.

Preparing a home for winter is not as difficult as you might think. It only takes a little common sense and some well placed plastic and weather stripping. Prepare your home for winter now, so when the first snow hits you aren't treading through it trying to do what should have already been done. It never hurts to begin winterizing your home in the late fall when temperatures begin to drop.
