How Women Can Enjoy Watching the Super Bowl (and Other Sports)

Ways to Get into the Drama of the Game

Though there are undoubtedly exceptions to this rule, most women don't enjoy watching sports. We question how our boyfriends or male friends can become absolutely mesmerized by the television on Sundays when football season is going on. We wonder how they can enjoy watching 300-lb men flip each other over during Monday Night Raw, especially when we see how fake those wrestling moves really are. However, if you don't want to lose out on some quality bonding time with your man during the Super Bowl, NBA Championships or the World Series, here's how women can get interested in sports enough to sit in front of the television for an entire game.

The first tip is obvious: eye candy. With such fantastic looking professional athletes like Derek Jeter, Tom Brady and Lebron James, no woman can resist becoming glued to the television screen when any of these guys are exhibiting their muscles and athletic prowess for the world. I know, any guy reading this will shudder at the thought of women watching sports for this reason. I'm only trying to appeal to the most uninterested female viewers.

Another way for women to get into watching sports (which doubles as a great way to bond with your man) is to ask the guys you're watching with to explain the rules of the game. Many women are uninterested in watching sports because they don't understand the fundamental basics. Ask your guy to tell you what the baseball stats at the bottom of the screen mean, or the ways basketball players get freethrows. Not only will you learn the rules and undoubtedly start to gain interest in the game because you understand it, but your guy will relish being able to show off his knowledge and explain to you the basics. He'll also be impressed by your interest, which may result in a great way to get closer.

Finally, get into the drama of the game. I've been told dozens of times that Monday Night Raw is similar to a daytime soap opera, and it's actually true, for wrestling and other sports. There are personal rivalries, failed marriages, adultery and drug abuse among the storylines in WWE. It's the same for other kinds of athletes, including pro football players and basketball players, as evidenced by the drama surrounding the accusations against Kobe Bryant a few years ago. Rivalry between Bryant and former teammate Shaquille O'Neal became so strong that Shaq transferred from the Lakers to the Heat. Watching sports on television will also allow you in on some other celebrity gossip, as many professional athletes date and marry some of our favorite actresses (like basketball player Tony Parker and Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria). Keeping track of the couplings will keep you busy if you can't manage to get interested in the real game.

Hopefully, these tips will allow even the most uninterested women to start enjoy watching sports, and eventually form an appreciation for the game beyond these superficial reasons. Perhaps when Super Bowl time rolls around, you'll be able to talk shop with the best of them.

Can you believe the Chiefs have made it to the playoffs this year? Unfortunately, I don't plan to see them at the Bowl, I'll be surprised if they win the first game. :-( Nice article.

I find this good advise. I grew up around the loud football parties. I love football. One sport I don't care to watch (it's not that exciting to me) but I love to play is basketball. GO BLUE! See ya at the Rose Bowl :)
