How to Work from Home Effectively

Mary Lake
Working from home effectively can be a challenge because it is not as structured as a traditional work environment. There are more distractions, more issues to deal with, and if something goes wrong you are the boss making you accountable. Part of avoiding any issues that can arise from incomplete or late projects, lost files, and clutter can be avoided if you set up a structured work environment. So how do you keep your home (and yourself) structured and organized enough to work from home?

Clean and Organized Work Area

Most desks at the office do not look like the pictures seen in the magazines, and if they look like it they do not stay that way for long. There will never be a way to keep your desk perfectly clean because there will always be paperwork that is going on your desk or trying to leave it. And when your office is at home it is much harder to keep clean and organized since it is not a traditional work environment. The only person that is going to give you a hard time about your filing and organizational structure is yourself. But before you can have a clean desk you have to be organized. And before you can organize you have to sort through everything.

The best way to start is to pull everything out of your desk and work area - then start sorting. Once you have everything sorted, set up a filing and other organizational system. This way you can find what you are looking for when you are looking for it. (And we have all had that moment when you need something right now, and you just can find it because it got sucked into the filing void.) After you have successfully sorted and filed, the next thing you have to do is find a place for everything. And ta-da! Your work area is now clean, organized, and everything you need is at your fingertips. Once you reach this point you have to keep in mind that you have to put everything back once you are done with it otherwise you will be in the same messy predicament before you started your organizational process.

But why is a clean and organized work area important in your home? After all it is you personal office in your house. The main reason is that your work area makes an impression, both on the people that may see your office and on you. You are going to work more efficiently and effectively when you are organized than when you are surrounded by clutter. Also, if you have clients come in your personal office it is a reflection on you and your business. And if it reflects poorly, then chances are your clients will go elsewhere.

Get Rid of the Distractions

This does not mean you have to work in a bubble of total silence that is distraction free. That is never going to happen, especially at home. Instead cut down the distractions that take you away from work and keep you from working effectively. What this does mean, is that you shouldn't be trying to work in front of the television, while trying to eat dinner, or doing the laundry. Regardless of where you are you are working - and that is what your attention should be devoted to.

Create Work Hours

By creating work hours you are creating structure, which is what a traditional job gives you. So once you pick your hours stick to them. It will help you focus your energy, work harder, and more effectively. And choose hours that will work best for your energy level - since you are working at home, you are your own boss. In other words if you have more energy in the evening as opposed to the morning to complete your work, set evening work hours. That way you are working during your peak performance hours. Also, this will put limitations on your time frame for completing your work. In other words, you will not feel like you have unlimited time to complete a task or project.

Take Breaks

Sometimes you will have to put in extra hours or have a large/overwhelming project. Traditional work lets you take breaks away from your desk, so when you are at home do not feel like you need to be chained to your desk all day. If you need to step away from your desk and take a walk, grab a cup of tea or coffee. Breaks will help you focus and recharge your energy.

Prioritize and Break Down Projects

Everything at home and work has a level of importance relating to when it needs to get done. Take a look at what you need to do each day, week, and month - and record it in a planner. Once it is recorded, make a color coded reference or number relating on its level of importance. Complete your tasks related to its level of importance, and leave smaller tasks with later due dates until later.

Tacking projects can be difficult, so break them down into mini-assignments. It is easier to complete a project in stages rather than all at once. Have due dates for these mini-assignments in order to create a timeline leading to a completion date. This way you will not be overwhelmed and you will not attempt to complete everything at the last minute.
