I've had naturally curly hair all my life and even though I have learnt to consider it an asset now, it has been a long journey to this point.
My mother told me that I had this unruly and hard to detangle clump of hair at the back of my skull that had terrorized her to no end so my childhood was awash in pixie cuts. Rather than go through the horror that was curly hair in a straight hair era she opted to cut my locks off. I always yearned for long hair growing up.
My older sister and I had went many a route to find the elusive straight hair we so sought after. Putting ones hair down on the ironing board and letting the iron do its magic was one way to get what we wanted, chemical straighteners, curling irons and finally enormous curlers the size of orange juice cans tacked to ones head were the various tortures we embraced.
At some point (and it really did seem a gradually process) I embraced my curls as my hairs true "face" but there was still the problem of frizz. Through trial and error I found a beautiful solution to my woes and here it is...the magical recipe!!
1. One day a week, brush out hair and then shampoo and condition it. After hair has been blotted with a towel (no tousling please!) apply either a serum, leave in conditioner or mousse to the mid section and ends of your hair. Fluff hair with fingers and allow to air dry.
2. for six following days do NOT brush hair out at all nor shampoo it. Only rinse hair with pure water in the shower or wherever you do your hair. After blotting...every other day put a hair product on your hair as in #1. Do not comb.
This has enabled me to have soft, shiny and ringlet type of hair with very little frizz..if any. I know it may seem weird to not brush or wash hair daily but in reality if your hair is dry and curly leaning to frizz..it does not need more than one day of brushing and shampooing etc. My hair always looks the best the first three days after washing and then it sort of flattens a bit but it never gets frizzy (very wet drizzly days excepted ofcourse..no one is perfect!).
I really hope this helps all of us naturally curly locks to finally get a hold on our hair dreams.
