How Workers Can Be Too Distracted to Be Productive

Todd Hicks
Are you a worker who is not as productive as you would like to be? Are you the boss who would not mind seeing those who work for you step up and produce? The fewer distractions there are to deal with, the higher the output is likely to be. You will learn job-related distractions at work that impact productivity.

You are too drowsy. If you are very sleepy, you can help wake yourself up by quickly getting a few minutes of sleep or getting up from your desk to get a drink of water or perhaps a soda that has caffeine in it. You can help prevent falling asleep on the job by getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep before coming in.

You are getting a lack of nutrition, therefore decreasing your amount of energy. It is your responsibility to eat a well-balanced diet that includes all of the essential vitamins and minerals you are supposed to get as well as eating sufficiently before and during your shift. If you are the boss, you should consider providing healthy snacks, at least some of the time.

You are experiencing strife or domestic trouble at home. It is smart to leave your personal problems outside and not bring them into the office. If you cannot do this, you should not come in. If it is not too much of a hassle, the management should provide free counseling.

You are mistreated by the boss. If your boss yells at you, you are likely to become upset, consequently impeding your ability to focus on and put care into your duties for a while. The onus is on the supervisors to treat the staff as precious contributors, not just some numbers that have no real human value.

You have too little activity to work with and stay stimulated. If I went a long period of time without having a respondent to interview while I was a market research telephone interviewer, I would have the tendency to drift off to sleep.

You are displeased with your pay or your inability to get a raise or promotion even though you are performing well. It is up to firms to reward all of their good employees.

You have been working nonstop too long. You should take a break at least once an hour.

You are pressed to meet expectations after starting a new job, getting a raise or being issued a deadline. It is vital to relax.

There is a wave of layoffs coming where you work. You must put aside the thought of being laid off while you are on the clock and concentrate. When you are not at work, you can focus on the threat of being let go by reducing your spending and looking for another job.

You have learned job-related distractions at work that impact productivity.
