How Would Thomas Jefferson Vote Today?

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the White House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: "This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.

My second favorite quote from Thomas Jefferson is the following:

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

I understand that there are hardships in life. In fact, it is the hardship that builds resolve and keeps the light of democracy lit. Why else would humans risk grave danger for a chance at freedom in this great country? It is not about redistribution of wealth, it is about opportunity.

As a business broker I have the distinct privilege to meet with business owners and discuss how they were able to overcome obstacles and build a great business. I am always amazed. Sometimes it is about the great vision they posses. Other times it is about the risk they took and sweat equity they poured into their labor of love. Most worked without a salary and raided their personal savings accounts to keep the business solvent during tough times before cutting back on the employees. There is no "bailout" for the small business world. Yet those that persevere and carve out success are often met with ridicule and punishment from the governing elite that created the rules as they navigated their way to success.

While there is certainly a need for government, too much of a good thing can become a liability. The dilemma lies in who decides how much is enough. When the people do not feel safe it is the government's duty to provide security. National security, public safety, and establishing regulatory guidelines that promote fair commerce are among the essential duties of government. However, building bureaucracy for the sake of preserving power violates the people's trust.

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the Government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
