How to Wrap a Gift

Brooke Coin
You may have spent a good deal of time, effort and money finding that perfect gift for a special someone. But if you wrap badly, what's the point. Gift wrapping should be easy, but many people have problems getting their packages to look attractive. Here's how to wrap perfectly every time;

1.
Buy a wrapping paper that is suitable for both the person receiving the gift and the specific occasion. Kids get especially excited over wrapping paper and there are many themed ones on the market - Dora, Sponge Bob - etc that makes a present for a child that little bit extra special.

2.
Choose coordinating ribbon and a bow. You can make your own bows with the ribbon you purchase, but that is not recommended for "beginning" wrappers.

3.
Assemble all your wrapping supplies on a flat clean surface. Don't use your best dining table, in case you end up slipping with your scissors.

4.
Use a tape measure or ruler to determine the actual size of the gift you are wrapping. Measure the length, width and height of the item. If the present you are wrapping is a very odd shape, purchasing an inexpensive plain cardboard gift box is a great idea. Once you have the measurements, add 2 inches to both the length and width measurements.

5.
Using a yardstick or ruler carefully measure and cut the wrapping paper to the dimensions you have just calculated, then lay your paper design side down of the flat surface you have chosen to work on.

6.
Position your package in the center of the paper so that you can bring the lengthwise edges together.

7.
Position the first lengthwise edge, and secure to the box with tape. Turn the other edge over by approximately 1 inch before securing. This well turned edge makes for a far neater looking wrap.

8.
Now position your box with the short edge facing you. Carefully take both the left and right edges and push the sides in, forming top and bottom flaps. Do this very carefully; it is at this point that most people tear their paper.

9.
Bring the upper flap down onto the box, and affix neatly with tape. For the lower flap, turn the edge as you did with the lengthwise side before securing for the neatest look. Repeat at the other end of the package.

10.
And there you have it, a neatly wrapped package that will look great on the gift table or under the Christmas tree. Add bows, ribbons and gift cards as desired.
