·At the top of the page type your family name. For example, "The Donaldson Family Birth Plan." The plan circles around your family since your husband will play a big role in making sure your plan is followed through.
·Make a list that includes the names of the mother, father, supporting person(s) such as doula and doctor. This way everyone will know whom you accept in the labor room.
·Type what methods you will want to use to help you relax during the labor. Some examples are relaxing music, photos, dim lights, body position desired, relaxation techniques and anything else you can think of that would help you to relax. Many times the nurses and doctors want to give you medication to relax you. In the birth plan you can request not to be offered medication unless you ask for it.
·Briefly state how you would like to give birth. Some women strive for natural birth and don't want to be induced with drugs. So you can make a simple statement saying, "I would prefer to use natural techniques to give birth." You can also include during the actually birth what you want. Some examples could be the use of foot pedals, local anesthesia for vaginal repair, preference of tearing over episiotomy and choice of position.
·Once the baby starts to come into this world your birth plan could include statements regarding the baby. Some examples are having the father cut the cord, keeping the baby in the room with you, breastfeeding only no formula and if baby has to be taken to nursery the father must be present too.
Labor is a very unpredictable event so a pregnant woman's desires may at times be over ruled by a doctor's professional knowledge. It is important to be flexible but you also have the right to express what you want. Your husband and whoever is your support person should be voicing and supporting your needs during labor.
