How to Write a Book in a Week, Part 2

Denise
Yes, you can write a book in a week if you create a plan and follow it each and every day. Here is the first step.

Step One: How Many Pages In order to get your book done quickly, you need to have a plan in place. First, you need to figure out how many pages your book will have. If it's a certain genre, go find similar books and see how many pages it is. Most books are 200 or 300 pages. So, if your book will be 200pages, you should have 20 chapters. If it's 300 pages, 30 Chapters. Next you have to break It down further. By Chapter, Plot, then ordering the chapters into a logical sequence.

Step Two: Chapter By Chapter Each chapter will be roughly, 10 pages. So now, you have the number of pages and chapters figured out. What has to be done next is to determine the topics of each chapter. If you have 20 chapters, It's best to come up with twenty three topics. When you have those written down, you can go through them then eliminate the weakest ones. How do you come up with topics? I guess it would be easy if it was a non-fiction book. Just think of questions people would ask. For example, if your book is about vegetarianism. Here are ten simple questions that could easily be topics. What is vegetarianism? What are the different types of vegetarians? How healthy are vegetarians from carnivores? How many people are vegetarians? Why should you consider being a vegetarian? Are people vegetarian because of religious reasons? What are some vegetarian recipes? How do vegans differ from vegetarians? How do vegetarians get protein if they don't eat meat? What do vegetarians eat in other countries? This example is far from perfect, but you can easily write an article about each topic listed above and Voila! you have a chapter. This article, though, is geared more toward fiction writers. You want to write about wicked aliens invading a peaceful planet. To make things go smoothly, you need a plot.

Step Three: A Plot Defined
A plot is simply the storyline. The plan of your story. You have 20 exciting chapters, each ten pages long. You have already written your plot in part one of this article. Now you are going to have to make each chapter flow into the next smoothly.

Step Four: Ordering The Chapters When your outline is written, then you must put it in a logical order. Remember when I said that you have to write at least 23 topics, then eliminate the weakest three? Do that now. Put it in the order that is best for your readers. Put yourself in their shoes so your book will not only be exciting, but flow nicely. Once that is worked out, there is only one thing left to do. Write. Since your aim is to write fast, you have to seriously sit down and churn out however many chapters you commit to a day. If you want to write a 200 page book, to get it done in seven days, you'll have to write about three chapters a day. Just sit down and do it. Don't stop to edit, or change things. Do that once you're finished writing the book. Just set aside three hours or so, and write your three chapters at the same time every day.

Reading Fast
What if you don't want to write every day? Sitting at a computer or a desk just doesn't' suit you. Well, you don't have to write. You can read.

Tape Recorders & Voice Recognition Software
Once your plot is written and you pretty much know what to do with your story, you can speak it into a tape recorder. This is by far, the fastest way to write a book. Dame Barbara Cartland wrote 723 books in her lifetime just by using many secretaries. She wrote a book a week and sold more than a billion copies. You read that right, a billion! You don't need a hire a team to get your book written. A simple tape recorder or voice recognition software will do just as well. Voice recognition software will take what you say and put it in printed form on the computer screen. You can use that, or get someone to transcribe your tape for low cost. You can outsource the work in other countries quite easily. Reading your book sounds easier than what it is. It will take time to learn how to do this well. If you are able to speak 200 words a minute, you can probably get a 200 page book done in about five hours. The only thing in reading your book is that you have to know exactly what you're going to say. Still this is one of the best ways to get your book done in record time.

Summary
1. Know how many pages your book will have 2. Come up with topics for each of your chapters and add three more 3. Put your chapters in a logical order so that it will flow smoothly. Eliminate the weakest three topics. 4. Write the number of chapters a day you've figured out, to finish your book in a week. 5. If you want to write even faster, you can read your book aloud using a tape recorder or speech recognition software.

With respect to Ellis's comment that the principle in The fastest way to write your book is the same as this, I would strongly disagree. This is one of the very minor techniques covered in the book. Mr Haslett describes at least 30 ways that are much more effective than this.

The article posted here is a very good introduction to the subject, and well written. My advice would be to treat it as an introduction to the book, and then get that, and you will soon be writing books at a blistering pace.

    Excellent tips, thanks!

There's a lot more information on how to do this in Dave Haslett's book "The fastest way to write your book", which I absolutely recommend. The basic principle is much the same, but the book contains a lot more ideas, tips, techniques and suggestions that make the whole process easier and make you feel that YES you can do it! Great book.

After reading this handy guide to writing a book in just a short time of one week, I have to say that I'm going to start writing my own book...right now! After all, given its ease as described in this article, how could I possibly not?!
