The first step is to read the text you plan to summarize. You may need to read it more than once. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the text in your head and that you can discuss it without having to re-read it. Now skim through the next and divide sections you want to summarize (write it down).
Photocopy the text so that you can make notes directly on the paper. Underline key points and specific sentences you want to highlight (or use a highlighter). Some people choose to start by writing the thesis statement, but if you find that you are struggling with it, it may be better to write the remaining body of text and to then return to the thesis when you are done.
Summarize the key points throughout. Re-read what you've written, starting with the thesis and working your way through the document. Read it out loud to yourself to ensure it flows easily and that it makes sense.
Other tips:
Write in the present tense.
Include the author and the title of work in your summary as well as bibliography.
The summary should not be as long as the original text.
When quoting the text, be sure to properly cite throughout.
Avoid including your own opinions and ideas in the text. Instead, including supporting evidence (such as published journal articles).
