How to Write a Compelling Family History

Erik Van Tongerloo
Writing a compelling family history requires more than only collecting facts about the history of your family. Your story need to fascinate readers and this is not always easy. Chronically facts will bore other people very soon and you only can make your family story to a success if you can't predict what will happen if you have read the first chapters of your story. Maybe you can create a mystery in the beginning of your family story where you can only find the answer after reading the full story.

Avoiding boredom in your family history story can be done by adding some funny facts or some anecdotes. Readers will be pleased and enjoy your story more than an ordinary family story which tells you only the events related to your family. The key is finding the words for keeping your readers interested in your story.

A compelling family history story needs a beginning, a middle and an end. Every good story needs these parts; why should a compelling history be different? Composing these three parts to an enjoyable read is the key to have success with your family history story. When you know this, you can start with grabbling information by using many sources. It is necessary to be full documented for making your story to a success.

THE SUBJECT OF YOUR FAMILY STORY
At first you need to decide what you want to tell. It is impossible to write a family history story including all the events which took place in the life of your family members. Your story needs an item; this can be a certain period in the life of your family, for example a story about experiences of your family during the first or second world war, a romantic story about your parents life and how they became a couple or anything which can be interesting for writing a compelling family history story which might interest also other people.

AN INTERVIEW
When you want to write your family history story you want to interview most of your family members and even people who know about the facts concerning the item of the family story you want to write. Probably you best start with your oldest family members. You will be surprised about the depth of information they can give. In many cases you can start with your grandparents, later your parents, uncles, aunts, cousins and even friends of your parents or neighbours. During your interview you can take notes or you can use a tape recorder and make later notes or a summary of the information they gave to you.

YOUR WRITING SKILLS
Now you have all the details for your family history story. You can start writing now but it is necessary you are convinced about your writing skills. If you think improvement is necessary for writing your story you can join a writers group. There are many writing groups to find for improving your writing skills and some are even specialized in certain projects like writing a family history story. They will teach you how to build up your story but also some courses for avoiding grammar and spelling mistakes, the use of different paragraphs, when you need a new chapter for your story, the use of a comma or semi-column and everything that can be important for improving your writing skills.

YOUR STORY
You are convinced about your writing skills and you have all the information you need. It is time to start with your story. You have made your decision of the subject and you can make an introduction for your story. Once you have finished this you can start with your real story. It is preferable to write chronological but create a real story with a mystery for keeping the reader interested in your story.

Also pictures can be useful for your family history story. Collect many pictures of your family related to the story you want to write. Probably you will have old pictures now but with the use of a scanner you can easy insert them in your text and make it to a wonderful presentation of your family history story.

Writing a compelling family history story can be fun and you will discover many facts about your family which you didn't know before. The process of writing your story is educational and your final story will be a nice memory for your family members.

Great tips. I know most people are fascinated with their family trees and will find this very interesting.

Very cool. We used to have to do those little family tree projects in grade school, but these seems much more fascinating.

A fantastic idea!!! Somewhere along the line, kids become curious as to their roots... this is an excellent way for them to discover their ancestors...and to keep handing down to future generations.
