How to Write a Couplet

Another Type of Poem for Your Poetry Book

Harriet Steinberg
A couplet is when two lines rhyme. You can write two line couplets, a poem that has four couplets, or a many as you want. However, I feel that having more than four couplets to a poem can be boring. Then again, it depends on the sophistication of the poem. You may want to try writing more than four couplets in one poem and see how the rhythm flows.
The following are examples of a couplet where two lines rhyme:

Tomorrow's my birthday and I'll be eighty-four
I'll be in a nursing home among others galore

Tomorrow's my birthday and I'll be four
And I won't have to stay home anymore

When I watch TV, especially the news
I get the pimples, known as goose

The following are examples of four couplets in a poem:

Look at all the pumpkin faces
Lighting up so many places.
On the porch and in the yard,
Pumpkin faces standing guard.

It's hard to work when it's so hot
Without air condition, I would rot
The air is stifling, I cannot sleep
My thoughts are there, but not so deep.
